Difference between term life and whole life insurance.

April 30th, 2008 by Todd Martin
by Todd Martin

Are you one among those who are still wondering which life insurance plan, would work? This selection of the right policy can be a daunting task and without the right advisors and help it can be a lot more time consuming than you would have imagined. It requires extensive research of all the options available and after you have carefully examined the scenario the final decision is easy for you. You will find two policies that exist which are term life insurance and whole life insurance. No two humans are alike and they have different needs and they can choose one accordingly that well suits their lifestyle and needs. A policy well chosen can reap you benefits in the long run and provide you a secure life for you and your family.

When a person purchases a whole life insurance, he has an advantage which takes into consideration three essential things into consideration they are: costs, coverage duration, and cash value. How fast you decide to buy this policy, you will be able to enjoy so many benefits. One among them is permanent level premium; this will help the person in coming future as it does not increase its rates with the passing time. Not like term life insurance policy, whole life insurance policy covers you for the entire life. Most of the people who want coverage for a limited period of time prefer going for term life insurance. Whereas in case of whole life insurance policy the person need not worry about the coverage coming to an end.

In one situation, there is no difference between both the policies that is term life insurance and whole life insurance they aim is to accumulate cash value. A person can receive them at the time of surrendering his policy if he has decided to do so. A policy loan can also be taken against them at insurance’s current policy loan rate. When a person decides to surrender his policy or expires when the loan is taken, the cash value or the death benefits which a person will get will automatically decrease. This cash value feature is the most essential component of whole life insurance policy as it acts as an investment component which can also provide you with financial security when you come across an urgent situation. This is also very important in increasing tax deferred savings feature which can be removed and borrowed next to.

If a person purchases earlier than expected time or funded a lot in the beginning, this can give a good retirement source which can be drawn at the time of retirement as little can be got from social security. For the persons who are above 50, this is very important feature as it provides extra sources of retirement income which can be used for daily living expenses. This can also fulfill a need for accidental long term care which is not exactly enclosed by Medicare. Whole life insurance policy is mostly considered by many people because it is designed in a simple, fast, and affordable way to protect life insurance for elders. And for the people who have fixed budget and are married small amounts of whole life are required in providing final expense coverage and caring the remaining loved one for their left over life.

Heal Cold Sores – Enjoy Quick Relief From Your Cold Sore

April 30th, 2008 by Denny Bodoh
by Denny Bodoh

Heal cold sores in a hurry using these proven methods. If you will let me, I will give you some great ideas you can use today to speed heal cold sores.

Want to heal cold sores? You will find there are only two basic ways. Either way can be used by itself. But, combining the two gives you a big edge in your effort to heal cold sores.

Yes, your body knows how to heal cold sores by itself. But it could take up to four weeks or longer. Who wants to go through that long and painful process when you can easily cure it in half the time?

We all want to heal cold sores as soon as possible. To do so, let us quickly review what causes the actual cold sore outbreak – so we can better understand the enemy.

Herpes simplex virus is the cause of all cold sore outbreaks. It enters a surface cell and forces the cell to make exact replicas of the virus. Once the cell is full or exhausted, it is destroyed – releasing these fully functional virus copies.

First, redness and swelling occur as the cells create new virus. Then the host cells break open, creating the open wound. We are very fortunate that this virus only creates sores on the surface, or it would pose a serious health risk.

To heal cold sores fast, you must use at least one of these two techniques.

1. HEAL COLD SORES BY TREATING THEM INTERNALLY.

Do you get more than one cold sore a year? If so, your first priority should be to take a top-rate vitamin and mineral supplement every single day.

Without a doubt, this is the most important first step for fast healing and defending yourself from future outbreaks. A good multi-vitamin will strengthen your immunity against this parasite virus – and all other viruses also.

In addition to a daily multi-vitamin regimen, taking lysine supplements during an outbreak will stop, or slow down, the virus replication process.

Lysine capsules are cheap and convenient. High lysine foods, such as dairy and fish, will help also. During an outbreak, 2000 milligrams to 4000 milligrams per day is common. 4 ounces of flounder contains 3000 milligrams.

The more quickly you stop the virus and send it back into hibernation, the faster you will heal cold sores.

If you suffer from re-occurring outbreaks, quite likely you are starving from calcium deficiency. Your body needs calcium to keep your body alkaline and highly oxygenated. Viruses cannot operate in a high alkaline body.

If you start taking 1000 to 3000 milligrams of calcium per day, you will be amazed. It will make a noticeable difference how often and how severe your sores will be. A good vitamin will already provide the minimum recommended 1000 milligrams.

2. EXTERNAL REMEDIES WORK WELL TO HEAL COLD SORES.

You can heal cold sores much more rapidly with a proven cold sore treatment, salve or ointment, applied directly to the outbreak.

Topical remedies that contain zinc generally work well. Zinc is a great healing mineral, both externally and internally. If the salve does not contain the sulfate or gluconate forms of zinc, avoid it. Other zinc forms will not absorb well enough to be of any value.

Two, strong anti-viral oils that are great as topical remedies are garlic and oregano. Either of these will chase away the cold sore virus quickly, and promote speedy healing of the wound.

Once in the healing stage, the level of your health will determine how fast your body will heal cold sores. You can speed it along with the use of a warm, damp tea bag – along with the oils mentioned previously.

Cleaning the outbreak regularly with hydrogen peroxide or alcohol is essential to prevent spreading the infection or re-occurrence of the same sore. It also prevents the chance of bacterial infection.

As mentioned at the top, your body is perfectly able to heal cold sores without your help. But, the cold sore treatment methods mentioned above will definitely increase your comfort and shorten the duration of your outbreak.

Imagine eliminating the embarrassing and painful sore in less time than ever before. Plus, you can now reduce the number of future outbreaks.

Using internal remedies to support the external remedies you are using is the best and quickest road to heal cold sores rapidly.

Botox: An Overview about Botox Injections

April 30th, 2008 by Raymond Lam
by Raymond Lam

Botox has become a well used cosmetic enhancement over the last few years by ridding people of age line and wrinkles; the problem lies in the general misconception about the cosmetic effect it creates. To help with this, we need to step back a few decades to when this substance was first researched and used. The substance is derived from Botulinum toxin, discovered nearly five decades ago; it was used to treat patients with neurological problems.

It wasn’t until around 1989 that the Federal Drug Administration agreed to allow its use in medical procedures to help people with disorders of the eye; some of these included patients with excessive, involuntary blinking and for those suffering with crossed eyes plus, on occasion, wrinkles. More research was carried out into other medical uses and in 2000 it was allowed to be used on patients that had a cervical dystonia condition; this eases the pain from serious contractions in the shoulders and neck, but it was also given the ok to be used on another more unusual eye condition. In their research, doctors discovered that Botox softened the frown lines between the eyebrows; after further tests in 2002 the FDA allowed it to be used for the first cosmetic enhancement and the drug finally had a new field of use.

Now, botox is injected into a number of areas, one of which is the forehead to help lessen the effect of years of muscle use that causes a frown; when given sufficient injections given over a period of time, frown lines for example, will reduce in intensity. If this procedure is continued, in many instances the lines will soften so much they will seem to disappear; now the same procedure is used on other areas of the face where lines form, generally with age. The injections are a purified and watered down version of the sometimes fatal Botulinum poison; Botulinum toxin can be deadly and at the very least make us unwell but when it is used in cosmetic procedures it is safe.

Unfortunately, lines and creases form whenever we laugh (especially as we get older) or make any other facial gesture; they are caused by muscles contracting. After years of making these expressions the wear and tear on your face begins to be noticeable and the lines start to become permanent; many ’skin age reduction cream’ manufacturers have tried to produce creams that reduce facial line but this is the only treatment that works, currently. Because botox paralyzes the facial muscles, normal movement, expressions and gestures are almost impossible to make; people who have regular treatment often look as though they are dummies because they cannot smile properly or make other facial gestures that we tend to rely on.

Whilst the face can still provide expressions, they are seriously reduced but this give the effect of someone looking much younger than they really are. Whilst popular this cosmetic treatment is still very expensive for what it is; this is why it has been coined as something only celebrities have performed because the least expensive injection can still cost upwards of 300 dollars to in excess of 1,000 dollars. There is always some concern about new treatments and botox is no exception with many people worried about the long term effects of injections, but even so this has not stopped its popularity.

The secret to Improve Your Metabolism

April 30th, 2008 by Ramu
by Ramu

Fitness offers us the opportunity of a full life with more confidence, energy and ability. The combination of good nutrition and physical fitness and the third component, emotional balance, all makes for a better quality of life.

Fat loss can be achieved by restricting the number of calories you eat, but the other important factor in weight control is the amount of exercise that you do and the effect that exercise has on your metabolism. Start to regard movement and physical effort as a privilege each time you climb stairs or walk instead of drive, garden, clean, carry items , or play with children rather than watching them. The accumulation of all these small bursts of energy throughout the day will make a big difference to your total activity during a week. Genetic or medical causes of obesity are very rare. However, some people do eat large amounts and remain slim while others, particularly long-term dieters and those who are inactive, still struggle to control their weight.

Our energy output increases during exercise, but exercise also speeds up the metabolic rate at which we burn off calories for up to 24 hours after activity. Exercise also increases the amount of muscle mass in the body, and the more muscle mass you have the more calories you use up. Muscle burns up energy 24 hours a day, whereas fat is relatively inactive metabolically-it just sits there doing very little.

Exercise vs Calories burned: Every type of activity burns calories, but the amount burned depends on how long, how hard, and how often the activity is performed. Aerobic exercise combined with body conditioning exercises is the optimum way to achieve fat loss, increase muscular strength and endurance and improve your metabolic rate. It is a common misconception that using weights results in over-sized muscles look. In fact, one feels leaner and firmer with increase in strength. The bones also become stronger and heavier with exercise, so weighing yourself without measuring your dimensions is misleading.

It might be a physical demand, such as running for a bus or catching a child from a fall, or it may be a mental challenge such as working through the night to meet a deadline. Physical activity will actually keep you mentally alert and help you cope with stress and depression.A raised metabolic rate and increased muscle mass offers more benefits, too. Exercise boosts the immune system, improves memory, regulates appetite and moods, and encourages fat loss. It gives us the ability to respond to any sudden demands made on us without causing damage to our bodies.

Crystal healing is growing in popularity

April 29th, 2008 by Susan Atkinson
by Susan Atkinson

At its core, crystal healing is a form of mysticism, witchcraft, and occult practices. Most crystal healing is guided to the healer by Spirit – who will tell the healer which crystals will be most effective and the patterns the crystals should be placed on or around the person’s body. The length of time used with the crystals will vary with each patient and healer.

Crystal healing is basically the ‘laying on’ of stones of different vibrational rates onto the body in order to effect healing and change. It may also involve laying out different energy grids or specific patterns of crystals around the body. Crystal healing is used to enhance healing of a wide range of physical and mental ailments. For example, amethyst is said to be useful against acne, atacamite against venereal diseases, agate against ulcers, and lapis lazuli against stroke symptoms

Crystals are used to draw and amplify light and color to the body’s aura, thus raising its vibrational frequency, and facilitate healing. Modern science has proven the existence of the vibrational frequencies of crystals and gemstones known as piezoelectric effects

The argument for crystal healing is based on the idea that everything has a vibration, and as such, the human body responds to these subtle vibrations. This idea extends even further than just the body.

Crystals have a perfect hexagonal molecular structure that causes them to vibrate at a constant rate. This is what makes them such good components in many modern technological items such as watches and computers. These are amazing, deep tones, and you FEEL the vibration flow throughout your whole body. If you have room in your home or office for a BIG bowl, these are a magnificent choice. Some crystal healers claim that each living organism has a “vibrational energy system,” which includes chakras, electromagnetic fields around the body known as auras , subtle bodies and meridians.

When your gemstones and crystals are not being used for healing purposes they should be placed in a secure location away from curious hands. You don’t want the time and energy you placed in the cleansing and charging of them to be neutralized by the energy of other people.

Why You Shouldn’t Waste Your Money on Manual Treadmills

April 29th, 2008 by Reagan Miers
by Reagan Miers

Manual treadmills may seem ideal for your wallet since they are relatively cheap treadmills, but your feet, body, and workouts can suffer in the long run if you purchase one. The whole purpose behind having a piece of home exercise equipment is to facilitate your workouts so you get optimal results. Using a manual treadmill can complicate a workout and even hinder your progress.

What makes manual treadmills so cheap? If you have ever walked on one, you know the answer! They have no motor. You are the treadmills motor! If you have never used a manual treadmill before, you should know that most are very difficult to bring up to speed unless they are in a steep incline. This may seem like something you can deal with at first, but unlike motorized treadmills, manual treadmills have no buttons to bring their inclines down. Who wants to walk uphill every workout?

Manual treadmills don’t give you the momentum you need for a good workout. The machine speeds up and slows down as you do. Constantly bringing a machine back up to speed will put a lot of pressure on your feet, knees and joints. Exercise equipment is supposed to facilitate the workout, not make it stressful on the sensitive areas of your body.

To get the most out of a workout on a treadmill, your body needs to maintain a fluid walk, run or jog. Manual treadmills aren’t equipped to do this. As stated, when you ease up or slow down, it slows down, too. There is no push, or momentum, to a manual treadmill. To be honest, it is virtually impossible to keep a consistent motion on a manual treadmill. Yes, you may burn some extra calories getting one of these treadmills up and running, and then up and running again when it begins to slow its pace. But, in the long term, more calories will be burned if you are on a treadmill that’s motor driven because it will keep your motion consistent and regulated.

Manual treadmills are bad investments because they can actually take time away from your workout. Most people don’t have a lot of time to workout. The time spent having to get on and off a machine to adjust its incline, and the constant slowing down and building back of a manual treadmill’s momentum is really a waste of precious time. A manual treadmill’s lack of features also makes it very easy to grow bored. Boredom can easily turn into exercise procrastination!

The number one reason people purchase manual treadmills is because they are cheap treadmills. You can find them for a few hundred dollars or less. While that may seem like a good deal, for just a few hundred dollars more, you can often times find a quality used treadmill that is motorized. And if you prefer to buy new, you can find a high-quality motorized treadmill for just under $1,000.

If you are serious about wanting to own a treadmill, don’t waste your money and time on a manual treadmill. You will probably end up regretting the purchase and feel that you have thrown your money away. Save your money and wait until you can afford a used one or one of the more budget-friendly motorized treadmills that are on the market. Not only will these machines give you better results, they are more enjoyable to use – and your feet, knees, and joints will thank you.

The Association Between Acid Reflux And Pregnancy

April 29th, 2008 by Anthony Galz
by Richal Peyton

Pregnancy can cause a lot of body changes. In most cases, these changes may cause some discomfort and sometimes certain health conditions. One of the health conditions that women may develop due to pregnancy is acid reflux. Let’s talk about acid reflux and pregnancy.

Is Acid Reflux Normal During Pregnancy?

Acid reflux is only common and expected in pregnant women. In fact, 1 in 4 pregnant women experience symptoms associated with acid reflux, such as heartburn, all throughout their pregnancy. The condition is also considered a pregnancy side effect and affects a third of all pregnant women. The good news is, acid reflux normally goes away after pregnancy. If this doesn’t happen in your case though, there is always treatment available after proper diagnosis.

Why Do Pregnant Women Have Acid Reflux?

There is a number of reasons as to why there is a link between acid reflux and pregnancy. The three main reasons for acid reflux during pregnancy are hormones, weight gain and pressure.

- Hormones – in a pregnant woman’s body tend to rise dramatically. When this happens, more acid is produced in the stomach, causing acid reflux. The hormones estrogen and progesterone may cause constipation and slower digestion, which in turn may worsen the symptoms of acid reflux. Furthermore, these hormones may also weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, making it easy for stomach acid to enter the esophagus.

- Added Weight -caused by pregnancy can contribute to hiatial hernias, a condition in which a part of the stomach extends beyond the diaphragm. As a result, acid tends to reach the esophagus.

- Pressure – builds inside the stomach as the baby grows. As a result, food is sometimes pushed through the diaphragm along with stomach acid. Thus, acid reflux occurs.

What Are The Symptoms Of Acid Reflux In Pregnant Women?

Vomiting and Nausea – During the first trimester of pregnancy, women often feel like vomiting or nauseated. For other women, these symptoms can go on for up to 9 months. These symptoms are said to be mainly caused by the rise of hormone levels in the pregnant woman’s body. Those with worse cases of acid reflux may develop malnutrition. Pregnant women who already had acid reflux before pregnancy are more likely to have worse cases of reflux compared to those who never had the condition before.

What Are Available Treatments?

H2 Blockers and Antacids – If drugs are necessary, a doctor may prescribe antacids and H2 blockers. These medications mainly act to neutralize acid levels in the stomach and reduce discomfort. However, there are other kinds of treatment that can be applied during pregnancy. These include lifestyle changes such as having a special diet, elevating the head while sleeping, and staying fit.

Treatment Challenge – Treatment for acid reflux during pregnancy is often more challenging because most medications are not recommended to pregnant women. The welfare of both the mother and unborn child is often the focus when doctors recommend medication. Furthermore, drug interaction may occur if the pregnant woman is already taking other drugs. Treatment for acid reflux and pregnancy is either a good or bad combination. This is why you should always speak with your doctor first for the most suitable treatment for you.

Losing 20 Pounds in 30 Days

April 29th, 2008 by Del Ball
by Del Ball

Many believe it is difficult to lose weight fast but I have found a way to lose 20 pounds in 30 days using a liquid diet. The nice thing about a liquid diet is that you will lose weight fast by using a variety of 100 calorie meals.

One of the problems with most diets is cravings and the liquid protein diet satisfies your sweet cravings with shakes, bars, and cocoa. Salt cravings are solved with soups and chilli. Protein cravings are solved with eggs and carbohydrate cravings are fulfilled with oatmeal.

The fact that you are not bored makes this diet one that you can stick with, unlike other diets that lack variety.

By limiting you carbohydrates in this diet your body goes into a mild ketosis causing the body to burn fat and at the same time you are not hungry.

Ketosis is when your body starts to convert fat to energy rather than burning carbohydrates. This happens when the body runs out of carbohydates and must burn fat for energy. Once mild ketosis starts a person will not be hungry.

In order to burn more fat, a dieter should always try to exercise 20 to 60 minutes per day either on a stationery bike, treadmill, or by walking or jogging. For really fast weight loss, exercise is important.

On this diet you should eat every 2 1/2 hours in order to keep your metabolism moving. You should eat 5 protein meals and 1 Lean and Green meal that is made up of lean protein and vegetables. Salads are the best vegetable on this diet and fish is the best lean protein.

I know people who have lost 10 pounds the first week on this diet and 20 pounds per month. It is doable as long as you follow the diet.

Acid Reflux Pain: Finding the Best Cure

April 29th, 2008 by Richal Peyton
by Richal Peyton

Acid reflux is a common health condition in most people today. However, because it is characterized by recurring pain and discomfort, people often want a quick remedy. This article will show how to assess and deal with acid reflux pain.

Causes Of Acid Reflux Symptoms

What is acid reflux condition? Acid reflux is basically a condition in which acid from the stomach travels up to the esophagus, therefore posing a risk for esophageal damage. Pain can be felt in the throat, center of the chest behind the breastbone, or abdomen. There are several causes to acid reflux pain and these include certain foods, stress, and gastrointestinal problems.

Foods – Certain foods can cause heartburn symptoms, as they can be highly acidic. For instance, citrus fruits like lemons and oranges are already very acidic in nature and so add to the accumulation of acid in your stomach. Furthermore, fatty foods make it hard for your stomach to digest, and so the stomach reacts by producing more acid.

Eating Habits – It’s not simply the certain foods you eat that cause acid reflux, it’s also your eating habits. Eating heavy meals a few times in one day can cause acid to build up during the long hours before each meal. You should therefore reduce portions while eating more frequently throughout each day. You should also avoid eating right before bedtime as lying down encourages acid to slide up into the esophagus.

In some cases, chest pains may occur if you have gastrointestinal problems caused by acid reflux. These can cause pain that resemble hear pains that make some sufferers think they’re experiencing a heart attach. Because acid can reflux into the esophagus, the areas around the esophagus such as the breastbone can also be affected. Chest pains are often treated with antacids.

How To Identify Pain Caused By Acid Reflux

Acid reflux patients may experience epigastric cramping, soreness in the abdomen/upper abdominal pain, stomachache, heartburn, sore throat, painful coughing, and chest pain. If you also find yourself waking up in the middle of the night because of pain or experiencing pain every time you bend your body and lie down, you are most likely to have acid reflux.

Conventional Treatment For Pain From Acid Reflux

Taking Antacids – Conventional treatment for acid reflux symptoms usually involves antacids and acid reducers. Antacids are mainly used to neutralize acids in your stomach and can often treat symptoms fast. On the other hand, acid reducers like H2 blockers are mainly used to weaken the actual source of acid production in the stomach, but may take longer to relieve pain compared to antacids. However, both antacids and acid reducers may be prescribed as a combination treatment for fast and effective relief.

Natural Treatment For Pain From Acid Reflux

The best natural treatments that can relieve acid reflux pain would include special diets (i.e.: alkaline diets), avoiding acidic foods, and light exercises. Special diets often utilize alkaline foods to counteract with the excess acid that’s “eating away” your stomach. Sometimes, simply avoiding acidic foods can ease acid reflux discomfort. Doctors may also recommend some light exercises to make it hard for acid to travel to the esophagus.

Sometimes, certain treatments may not relieve acid reflux pain or may take longer to take effect. The point here is really to treat symptoms and the condition itself. For instance, there is treatment that reduces pain as well as heals damage caused by acid reflux. Speak with your doctor before taking any treatment.

Rapid Weight Loss For You?

April 29th, 2008 by Gary Andrews
by Gary Andrews

Often, losing weight, even on a rapid weight loss program is something we try and fit into our otherwise busy weekly routines although it should really be considered much more important. Following your weight loss diet program to the letter is key to achieving the weight loss you want but many changes are needed, some of which are detailed below. The speed at which a person will lose weight depends on many factors; some are shown below:

*Obesity or weight problems that may run in the family

*Past or present psychological issues

*Desire to lose weight

One thing is for sure, the effects that weight brings are more than just skin deep. It is not just a feeling of value but physical aspects including general exercise, clothing and health issues are all challenged by this condition which can be changed with weight loss. Rapid weight loss programs can achieve this but they are generally a combination of things; regular exercise and a healthy nutritious diet are also going to be part of this plan. The diet plan must be flexible to your tastes other wise it will fail, put aside at least a quarter of an hour every day to carry out some form of physical activity like brisk walking, running or other type of cardiovascular exercise.

Do not worry if your rapid weight loss plan is not producing results as quickly as you would like; everyone has a different metabolism and some will see results faster than others; this is perfectly natural so do not become despondent. The flexibility required for the diet plan might also be required for the exercise program as well to increase the difficulty level if the weight isn’t being lost as quickly as expected. Whilst most systems do work, there isn’t one that will work for everyone that uses it so you may have to try another if the one you are using isn’t producing results; this is quite natural.

Some people are unable to run, dance or swim so if you are only comfortable walking then that is fine; calories are burnt quicker with muscle that has been converted from fat, even as a result of walking, but not everyone is suited to vigorous physical exertion. Exercise often means a great deal of body fluids are lost and need to be replaced; whether on a rapid weight loss program or not, don’t forget the benefits of at least six 8oz glasses of water each day because it also flushes out nasty toxins as well. Keep away from fried foods especially deep-fried as they contain a great amount of fat and whilst fish and chicken appear leaner than beef, this white meat can contain more fat than when beef is fried.

It is recommended for those on a strict diet to opt for grilled food as this contains a smaller amount of fat after the food has been cooked. Whilst some diets advocate a reduction in carbohydrates, this should be done in consultation with a nutritionist as carbohydrates are the fuel that creates the energy required for your body to function. By sticking to this type of plan you can expect to lose around a pound in weight per day but bear in mind that once you stop, the weight will go back on again.

What Are The Symptoms Of Kidney Stones

April 28th, 2008 by Frederic Baker
by Frederic Baker

People may suffer from kidney stones without even knowing about it. Kidney stones form in the bladder and they are essentially crystallized articles of minerals that occur in your urine. Ignoring the early warning signs may result in serious negative health repercussions in the future, up to and including hospitalization and death.

While the dimensions of the stones remain small, they do not create any problems. However, if they increase in volume they start blocking the passage of other substances through the kidneys. Therefore the presence of stones in this organ may produce simple or complex issues affecting in the proper operation of the kidneys themselves.

One of the initial indications that stones are present in the kidneys is an intermittent twinge in the abdominal region. This indicates that there are some stones there and that they are growing to a point where they are starting to block the kidney from eliminating waste. The increase in pain is usually proportional to the enlargement of the stones themselves in the kidneys.

People will feel severe pain or aching in the back on one or both sides, bloody, cloudy or smelly urine or suffer an abnormal increase in the frequency to urinate. Sometimes, the only symptom manifested is a sudden extreme pain in the stomach area which may be mistaken for food poisoning.

The smaller stones that form in the kidney can usually pass through the urinary tract within a few nights, especially if they are as small as a grain of salt. However, the larger kidney stones affect the body which shows signs of increased periods of fever, chills and infections. As the stones make their presence felt in the kidneys, attacks become more frequent and can last up to four weeks.

As any sufferer of kidney stones will tell you, drinking water in large quantities will help preventing dehydration of your kidney and help the kidney stones to dissolve or pass through the urinary tract. Ask your doctor about the effects of changing your meals to exclude any food or drink containing oxalate. Here are a few to avoid: rhubarb, spinach, beets, peanuts, okra, chocolate, black Indian tea, sweet potatoes.

Medical experts normally have the same opinion that the recommended calcium supplements dosages should be nearly 1,200 mg per day. Yet, one study does indicate that women who took calcium supplements had a 20% higher risk of contracting kidney stones. Research indicates that dosages of calcium above 2,000 mg per day are directly related to the formation of kidney stones. Few experts argue that this higher risk occurs due to supplements that are often taken in the morning, either without food or with breakfast, which is typically low in oxalates. Risk of formation of such kidney stones is reduced if these supplements are taken after meals.

The larger the stone, the more an intervention will be required. Surgical removal during an operation is the last step in an upgrading line of medical technology that fights kidney stones by turning them into residue, removing by the use of straw-like devices and scopes. For the lucky ones, stones will go through the urinary tract naturally by having the body having ingested water and fruit juices in large quantities.

What You Should Know When Making Treadmill Comparisons

April 28th, 2008 by Travis Van Slooten
by Torii Tompson

Buying a treadmill is no different than any other product. You will get what you pay for. If you are unfamiliar with treadmills, you should educate yourself on what to consider and keep in mind before you purchase one. All treadmills are not created equal and treadmills come in a wide range of prices for a reason. Arm yourself with information on treadmill warranties, individual space allotment and the individual performance, components and features of the treadmills you are considering.

Just like most other products, the more expensive treadmills are higher quality machines. Yes, it is easy to find cheap treadmills that are appealing to the wallet. But, most people end up wishing they hadn’t purchased them. Cheaper machines don’t live up to workout expectations, and they often break down. A high quality treadmill will cost at least $1000. While that may sound like a lot of money for a piece of exercise equipment, these high end machines give better workouts and are less likely to break down. Keep the following things in mind when you go treadmill shopping.

The warranty that comes with a machine is the tell all on whether it will last long term. If the machine you are considering only comes with a 90 day or one year warranty, realize that the manufacturer knows it will need repaired, soon. Manufacturers of high quality treadmills will offer a lifetime warranty with their machines.

Look for the differences in warranties. Does one offer in-home servicing? Are there loopholes in the warranty? Are there any hidden costs in the warranty? Be sure to read all of the writing on a warranty, even the small print.

Space is an issue for many people. If you don’t have room for a non-folding treadmill, consider a folding treadmill. When comparing folding treadmills, see how easily the deck will fold. There are some models on the market that will fold with the push of a button. This is ideal for someone who may have difficulty lifting up the treadmill’s deck. If you plan on moving your treadmill around or storing it away between workouts, look for a folding treadmill that is easy to move around.

You wouldn’t purchase a car without test driving it, why should buying a treadmill be any different? After all, a treadmill’s performance is crucial to whether you will be happy with it. Test out the treadmill before you purchase it. Put it through a workout and see if it meets your needs and expectations. If the motor sounds strained or make irregular noises, it is probably not powerful enough for you. In addition, know that some treadmills will go faster and incline more than others. If you are a runner, having a treadmill that will be able to keep up with your speed is crucial.

Treadmills come with different components. Be sure you note which models have which components. Reading the treadmill buying guide is a great way to become familiar with the key components to look for in a treadmill such as the motor, deck, frame, the tread belt and the belt rollers.

A great way to get insight on various models of treadmills is to visit a message board where people discuss exercise equipment. These places will give you an opportunity to meet people and ask questions about treadmills. These first hand accounts can go far in helping you decide which treadmill you should purchase, and which machines you should avoid.

No More Worries With Acid Reflux Surgery

April 28th, 2008 by Anthony Galz
by Richal Peyton

One of the most effect ways to treat reflux symptoms is to actually stop acid secretion in the stomach. Constant irritation such as pain in the abdomen and inner lining of the esophagus is often the main symptom of acid reflux, and this is why some people resort to surgery. In many cases, drugs are able to eliminate symptoms, but in other cases a doctor may recommend surgery. Let’s take a look at the suitability, benefits, methods, and preparations of acid reflux surgery.

When Am I A Candidate For Surgery?

Doctor’s Recommendation – Your doctor may recommend acid reflux surgery if initial treatments for acid reflux surgery has not worked and symptoms have continued to persist. Furthermore, you might want to consider surgery if you don’t want to be on medication for life (when that option is recommended).

Not Responding to Medication – Doctors will also sometimes find that their patients are unable to keep up with their medication and so may suggest a permanent solution such as surgery. Finally, severe damage in the esophagus will often require surgery.

Pre-Surgery Testing – Of course, your doctor will always perform tests before pushing through with surgery. Surgery is often aimed at repairing the stomach valve so that acid is blocked from leaking into the esophagus. Your current condition will often be considered and if you are deemed fit enough for surgery, then a procedure can be performed.

What Are The Benefits Of Surgery?

Less Discomfort – Almost all patients that undergo surgery for acid reflux end up free of heartburn. More than half of all patients who undergo surgery also end up being cured from respiratory symptoms like asthma caused by acid reflux. And if you developed Barrett’s esophagus due to the condition, surgery is considered the only treatment that blocks both acid reflux and bile. And because bile reflux is an acid reflux complication that can cause cancer, surgery is definitely advantageous. Furthermore, surgery is performed on children who have severe acid reflux complications, experienced severe side effects from medication, and had no improvement from medication.

What Are The Methods Of Acid Reflux Surgery?

Two Common Methods – The common methods used include fundoplication and Intraluminal endoscopic acid reflux surgery. When a surgeon performs fundoplication, the walls of your esophagus will be tightened to increase pressure by the lower esophageal sphincter. This means that acid from the stomach will have a harder time regurgitating upwards. On the other hand, Intraluminal endoscopic acid reflux surgery apply the same method but this time with the use of an endoscope.

Most surgeons recommend these methods as they are safe and effective to use. Recovery time after surgery is often quick and patients are able to go home right away with optimum results.

After Surgery – Coping after having acid reflux surgery is not a daunting task. You will simply be required to do some light exercises at home and gradually add solid foods to your diet over the course of a few days. Medication is often no longer needed and pain is usually very mild within the first few days after surgery. If there is some discomfort or pain after surgery that’s concerning, don’t hesitate to call your doctor.

Beauty Topics: Acne Skincare

April 27th, 2008 by Raymond Lam
by Raymond Lam

For most of us that take pride in the way we look, the thought of suffering with acne or Zits, may at first seem awful; treatments however, are slowly improving. This is a skin complaint that affects many people around the world so scientific research to find a cure is fierce; now, some of these skin conditions are gradually being conquered. We can classify acne skin care products into 3 broad categories:

*Drugstore: Preventative treatment

*Over-the-Counter: Treatments for conditions that do not require prescription

*Prescription only: Requires visit to doctor

Many skin care products are used as a measure to prevent acne; these include cleansers, make-up removers and other similar products that can help prevent the condition. Many people these days use products like this to maintain their skin; there use is not just confined to individuals who are suffer with the complaint. Some of these products are designed to act like an acne skin care product and act against the causes of this complaint; they work by limiting the production of sebum/oil and prevent clogging of skin pores. These types of products are reducing the chance of oil staying in the pores and aiding the growth of harmful bacteria which assists the formation of the skin condition.

This type of skin care treatment also includes those which exfoliate such as skin peels; there is now a variety of this type of product available over the counter. This type of peel helps reduce the chance of oil clogging up the pores as well as removing other skin impurities; this can reduce the bacterium growth on your skin. The growth of the skin care market has allowed even more specialized acne skin care products to be available without the need to visit the doctor. A bacterium that aids the formation of acne is stopped by creams and cleansers that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid; these include creams, cleansers and peels that slow down acne formation.

Dermatologists recommend any product should have low concentrations of the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide (no more than 5.5 parts per hundred) if there is an adverse reaction; if a reaction occurs, a cleaner or cream containing alpha hydroxy acid should be safe. It is not always possible to find an acne skin care product that works first time; if nothing you use is effective then speak to your dermatologist for advice. On-prescription treatments are prescribed by a dermatologist and can include ointments that can be applied on the affected area or oral antibiotics or just any topical ointment.

Your doctor can recommend that in order to extract the contents of the pustules that a small surgical procedure could be carried out; this is not something you should ever attempt yourself. An alternative that has been shown to work well is hormone therapy; this type of skin care treatment has been very effective in many cases. Tackling this skin condition is not the problem it once was and if treated properly permanently marked skin does not have to happen.

Do weight loss pills really work?

April 27th, 2008 by Anthony Voronoff
by Anthony Voronoff

Today, overweight and obesity is becoming an increasing problem for a major part of the population in developed countries. For example, in the US, more than 60% of the population is either overweight or obese.

Because this is such a problem, the weight loss industry is also rapidly expanding. Weight loss pills, one of the industry’s products, have become increasingly popular as well. However, do these pills really work? Are there actually any benefits that you may hope to get from them?

Today there are prescription weight loss pills available, that are prescribed by your GP in case you have high BMI and health-threatening obesity. There are also natural dietary supplements, that might be useful if you are not morbidly obese, and you want to lose weight and gain pleasant looks instead.

In general, all weight loss pills generally function like fat blockers, fat burners or appetite suppressants. Of these, fat blockers appear to have the most promise.

To answer the previous question, then, do weight loss pills really cure you of being overweight forever? To answer that, let’s look at why excess weight happens in the first place.

One of the reasons is genetic predisposition for weight gain. So, if you take appetite suppressants or fat burners, your genetics isn’t affected at all, and pills aimed for slight weight loss support cannot change the genetic program of your body.

For this to happen, you’ll need to change your diet and lifestyle in general. When you begin on a diet and lifestyle change, weight loss pills might help you as you begin your new life. Later on, as you begin to take in proper nutrition and add in some physical activity, you should be able to dispense with these weight loss pills.

The second, most widespread reason for excess weight is your life style and nutrition. Stressful life, lack of physical activity in conjunction with eating fatty and unhealthy meals leads to breach of metabolism.

With this situation, a weight loss pill is not going to help you lose weight. Simply suppressing your appetite or taking a fat burner is not going to restore your metabolism and make it healthy again until you take the steps to do so.

What’s most important here is that you should start a healthy diet and embark on increasing your physical activity during your day. If you do this, then yes, weight loss pills can provide you a jumpstart and may work to enhance your weight loss.

As an example, fat blockers can help you absorb less fat; if you eat a healthy diet in addition, you should be able to lose more weight.

If you consider fat blockers as a magic pill and keep eating fatty and starchy food, you will hardly notice any significant weight loss results. Your metabolism stays broken and you’ll decide that weight loss pills are just waste of money.

Please consider this – your personal activity comes first – exercising and proper healthy dieting. Only in this case you will enhance your weight loss with taking fat blockers. Then you will see that dropping 40 or 50 kilos in 5 – 6 months is not an advertising claim but a real and achievable result of your own efforts supported by weight loss pills.

What Is The Cost Of Lasik Eye Surgery?

April 27th, 2008 by Louis Zhang
by Louis Zhang

Due to its effectiveness and affordability, Lasik eye surgery is rapidly gaining popularity in the US and Canada. How much does Lasik cost? The average cost of Lasik eye surgery varies, depending on the state of your eyes and the degree of post-operative care that you will need.

Corrective laser eye surgery stands as the most popular method of removing the need for glasses available today. This is due to the reduced cost of the surgery, which is much lower than it was when the technique was first developed.

The cost of laser vision correction depends a lot on various factors and it varies from place to place. The cost in America is different from that in Canada. Again in America the cost varies from state to state and from provider to provider.

In Canada, the largest provider of Lasik surgery is Lasik MD, and it accounts for up almost fifty percent of all the Lasik surgery patients there. The cost of Lasik eye surgery in Canada are determined by the same factors that determine the cost of the surgery in the US. The following are the factors that determine the cost of Lasik eye surgery.

In determining the price of corrective eye surgery, the cost of the surgery for each eye is calculated separately. In effect, correcting one eye constitutes a single Lasik surgery procedure.

As new technology is developed and implemented it changes the price of surgery. The skill level of the doctor is another contributing factor as is the location of the clinic performing the surgery. The expensive equipment also needs to be maintained and paid for, which bring up the cost of laser eye surgery.

The cost of surgery is also determined in part by the severity of your sight problem. The rest of this article will help you understand how the cost of Lasik surgery differs from the United States to Canada and the average cost of surgery in these two countries. The cost, though different between the two, does not differ by very much.

If you see a quote of $500 per eye, be aware that it is not a realistic estimate. Your eyesight will likely have degenerated past the point where it can be done at such a low rate. Precise laser eye correction costs a lot more.

While it is possible to have Lasik surgery that costs less than a thousand dollars, these surgeries are done using inexpensive equipment such as excimer lasers or bladed microkeratomes. Such equipment may not produce results that are as good as those achieved by modern equipment such as wavefront technology. The price of surgery that involves wavefront technology ranges from one thousand dollars to two thousand and five hundred dollars.

Previously the cost of Lasik eye surgery was high but from 2006 the price has stabilized to an affordable level. In December 2007 it was found that the average cost of laser eye surgery has dropped down a little lower than 2006 costs.

Not all types of skins are created equal. There are some people who have sensitive skin, dry skin, oily skin and the likes. Moreover, there are people who are prone to skin allergies. Aside from knowing your skin type, you should also take into consideration your gender when buying skin rejuvenation skin care products. Always bear in mind that men and women have different skin care needs. For instance, men have naturally thicker and oilier skin compared to women, thus, if you use skin rejuvenation skin care products that are designed for women on a man’s face, you will not really good results.

Skin pigmentation is another very important issue here. Increased skin pigmentation is greatly associated with aging and for this you can use a skin lightener. This will help to smooth out the skin and fade out any blotchy or splotchy areas. A skin cream that contains vitamin C as a main ingredient will also work well as it will reduce the hyperpigmentation that is associated with aging skin and works by decreasing the production of melanin by the melanocytes.

skin rejuvenation skin care products offer great benefits and protection against different symptoms of aging. However, like any other skin care products, when you purchase skin rejuvenation skin care products, you should be careful about picking the product that will work well with your skin type. Stop Underarm Sweat

April 26th, 2008 by Jed Elaine
by Jed Elaine

Underarms are a private matter. Having that said, it’s also evident that people are increasingly fussing over their underarms, men and women alike although in different manners and to different extents. Whether it’s grooming, hygiene, medical treatment, vanity or other reason or purpose, it’s getting due attention nowadays.

Underarms are a sweaty business. As such, they entail high maintenance and can be prone to hygiene or medical problems if they are not accorded with proper care. The underarm regions are endowed with high concentration of sweat glands (both eccrine and apocrine) and hair follicles and can easily get messy through their routine functions.

Underarm sweat is there basically for cooling and lubrication. When our body heats up because of physical exertion or surrounding high temperatures, the process of sweat evaporation will result in a cooling effect. Lubrication comes into play when there is friction resulting from arm movement rubbing against the body. A second kind of underarm sweat is a milky-like secretion found in areas with abundance of hair follicles. This kind of sweat does not have any known function. It looks quite gross and smells that too when compounded by bacteria.

Hence, underarm sweating is natural and normal when healthy people are subjected to their expectant conditions. This can go wrong by having too much (Axillary Hyperhidrosis) or too little (Axillary Anhydrosis) of it. Of the two conditions, Axillary Anhydrosis is generally much more serious. Full-fledged medical attention must be summoned quickly as it’s potentially life-threatening.

Excessive Underarm Sweat is a lot more common and affects millions of Americans. It is estimated that 1% of people has this condition in varying degrees. It can be quite mild and some sufferers are actually oblivious to their problem with underarm sweat. On the other hand, it can also be quite serious, especially when it’s accompanied by excessive sweat in other parts of the body like the hands (Palmar), feet (Plantar) and face (Facial).

There are two categories of Excessive Underarm Sweat. The first category is Primary Axillary Hyperhidrosis and the second one is Secondary Hyperhidrosis. The former is direct and straightforward in both effect and treatment while the latter is as depicted by name related to another underlying medical problem. Having that said, it’s not necessarily sticky as when the root cause such as diabetes, thyroid and so forth is eradicated, the associated Secondary Excessive Underarm Sweat will recede in tandem.

Yes, underarm sweat is not a bad thing. By and large if we are on-the-ball with our diet, exercise and lifestyle habits so to speak, chances are we will have no issues with underarm sweat. Even if indeed there’s a problem brought on hereditarily, simply staying honest with our hygiene can prove to be the greatest remedy.

How To Stop Underarm Sweat Naturally

April 26th, 2008 by Jed Elaine
by Jed Elaine

Underarms are private business but it’s also big business for healthcare and personal grooming. Women fashionably shave and tend their underarms for both hygiene and cosmetic reasons. Men still keep their underarm hair but the use of deodorants and antiperspirants on their underarms have noticeably become common practice.

The presence of lymph nodes, hair follicles and sweat glands are indications that the underarm areas are sensitive and require extra care and attention. The high heat sensitivity there results in its tendency to sweat for cooling and lubrication purposes in natural response and regulation of our body system.

Underarm Sweating is thus a necessary process and we should not be thinking about How to Stop Underarm Sweat if it’s done in a natural manner under appropriate conditions. Having that said, it can go out of control and treatment becomes essential. It is estimated that around 1% of people sweat too much and too easily. That’s millions in the US alone. Excessive Underarm Sweating is technically a medical disorder and the term for it is Axillary Hyperhidrosis.

The two categories of Excessive Underarm Sweat are Primary and Secondary Axillary Hyperhidrosis. Primary Axillary Hyperhidrosis is a direct result of a few possible causes most common of which are diet, emotional factors, fitness level and heredity. Secondary Axillary Hyperhidrosis is caused by another underlying medical problem such as diabetes, malignancy, thyroid and so forth.

The answer to How to Stop Underarm Sweat in the case of Primary Excessive Sweating ranges from over-the-counter antiperspirant through prescription cream, injection and oral medication to surgery. For Secondary Excessive Sweating, treatment should be directed on the root cause problem, removal of which will automatically resolve the sweating issue.

It is worthwhile to mention that in selecting a treatment to stop Excessive Underarm Sweat, there are important factors to consider such as cost, side-effect, risk, scar, suitability, necessity and reversibility. Frustrated sufferers tend to make the mistake of going overboard in selecting a treatment. This may end up doing more harm than good instead.

The most practical and pragmatic approach to stop Excessive Underarm Sweat is to act in moderation. Start with simple and mild treatment and move on to more drastic measures in gradual steps only as the need arises. You never know if the simplest treatment might be the most suitable. In fact, many ex-sufferers are cured by a simple home treatment by Mike Ramsey called Stop Sweating And Start Living. The cost of treatment is low but the probability of cure is high.

Should Breastfeeding Moms Be Concerned About Hoodia Side Effects?

April 26th, 2008 by Reagan Miers
by Reagan Miers

Once the baby arrives, most new moms begin to think about losing a bit of weight. Many new moms may be tempted to opt for a diet pill to help kick start the weight loss process. Some of the most popular weight loss supplements sold today are hoodia diet pills. While they have been shown to be safe with little to no hoodia side effects, breastfeeding moms are advised not to take them.

Authentic hoodia gordonii is considered to be very safe with virtually no side effects. Despite this, it is not recommended for breastfeeding moms to take hoodia diet pills. In all of my research, I could not find any scientific reasons or otherwise as to why this advice is given. However, I do have some theories as to why breastfeeding moms should avoid taking hoodia supplements.

Since hoodia works to suppress the appetite, it is only reasonable to believe that if it passes into your breast milk your baby’s appetite may be suppressed too. Since a baby needs all the nourishment she can get, the last thing a baby should feel is “full” when she isn’t. A baby needs all the nourishment she can hold so she can grow healthy.

A breastfeeding mom needs to keep her own health in mind. She needs a lot of nourishment and calories to keep her body strong and healthy. Taking an appetite suppressant like hoodia can make a women feel full. This means she will eat less and she will not receive the nourishment and calories she needs to stay healthy and breastfeed.

One of the easiest ways a breastfeeding mom can get back into shape is to walk. Put the baby in her stroller and take a walk with her each day. You can increase the duration and pace of the walk as time passes and you become stronger. It’s important that you stay hydrated when you are breastfeeding. Dehydration is not a good thing for breastfeeding moms so be sure to drink plenty of fluids while you walk.

Another option to jump start weight loss is to take a class. Talk with your doctor, or check at your local hospital, to see if there are any exercise groups available for new moms. Many times you will find classes where you can take your baby along, too. These are like “mom and me” exercise classes.

While you may be tempted to take various diet supplements while you are breastfeeding, it is not recommended. Breastfeeding alone is increasing your metabolism. A sensible diet combined with gentle exercise will be far more beneficial for you and your baby. Your baby is relying on you to provide all of their nourishment.

Despite the recorded hoodia side effects being almost unheard of, it is still not recommended that breastfeeding mothers take this diet supplement. Postpone the hoodia diet pills until after you have finished breastfeeding. A sensible diet and gentle post natal exercise will have you glowing and toned up in no time.

Advice on How to Keep Down Your Child’s Dental Bills

April 26th, 2008 by Peter Blanket
by Peter Blanket

Healthy teeth is important. As a parent, it’s your responsibility to ensure your child gets proper dental care as early as possible. This way, cavities and other dental problems can be avoided. It’s also going to be less costly on you too. Don’t neglect your child’s dental health, otherwise you can expect huge dental bills when your child’s dental problems have become too serious.

Start Your Child Early

Take your child to the dentist for regular dental check ups as soon as he turns two. There are pediatric dentists who specialize in taking care of small children’s dental needs. These dentist have dental equipment that are the appropriate size for their small patients. And usually, they would have things in their clinics such as stickers and coloring books that serve as distractions to small children as the dentist checks their teeth. If your child is still too young to take to the dentist, the responsibility of taking care of his teeth starts with you. If there aren’t any teeth showing yet, you can clean your child’s gums with a wet soft cloth. As soon as you see two teeth touch each other, you can start brushing your child’s teeth. Use a toothbrush with very soft bristles. Don’t use fluoride toothpaste; use toothpaste that’s specially formulated for toddlers. Only use a tiny amount of toothpaste in every brushing.

When you’re putting your child to sleep at night, don’t give him a bottle of milk to suck on all night. Frequent (and needless) sucking can cause buck teeth. Furthermore, your child’s mouth becomes a fertile breeding ground for cavity-causing bacteria if you leave him with a bottle of milk all night. It won’t be long until your child experiences tooth aches.

Frequent Visits to the Dentist

It’s best that you start taking your child to the dentist before the onset of dental issues. This way he won’t associate trips to the dentist with pain or discomfort. If you wait too long to take you child to the dentist, such as when he has a tooth ache or cavities, your child is likely going to fear going to the dentist later on because he will associate those visits with pain and discomfort.

Keep an Eye on What Your Child Eats and Drinks

You don’t need an expert to tell you that candy is bad for the teeth. However, recent studies show that dental problems are actually caused by the frequency of eating candy and not by how much candy you eat. For example, at Halloween, it’s better to let your child eat the candies he wants to it in one go instead of having him eat one piece of candy every day. That’s not to say you should let your child eat a whole bag of candy in one sitting, though. It’s vital that you help your child develop the habit of brushing his teeth after eating candy.

Then there are the juice drinks, which have been found to cause a lot of dental problems. While juice drinks are preferable to sodas, make sure that your child does not drink more than 6 ounces of 100% fruit juice each day. If your child is still bottle fed, avoid giving him juice in a bottle. You can teach him to drink his juice from a cup or to use a straw.

New Weight Loss Discovery

April 26th, 2008 by Daniel Falk
by Jasper Dildy

Losing weight seems like a huge struggle for many people today, and the huge number of different weight loss plans isn’t helping the situation any.

Low carb or low fat?

Some plans say to cut a meal or two out, but others say eat more meals daily.

Some say simply exercising more is the key, while others say just make some changes in diet or add some pills to help lose weight.

Some say to do a lot of aerobic exercise every day. Others say lift weights.

Some of the latest research is showing that there may be other factors at play, besides just the above areas of which foods to eat, how to exercise, and good supplements to take.

Dr. Suzanne Gudakunst has studied this field extensively, and has now released a report showing that many of the typical foods we eat cause problems in our digestive tract that makes losing weight a losing battle for many people.

Plaque and parasites in the stomach and colon are known to make weight loss a much bigger issue for some people, even if they are exercising more and eating less.

By making some simple changes to your daily routine, you can address these problems once and for all, and finally lose the weight you may have been struggling with for so long and not understanding why it was such a struggle.

There is no “magic pill” when it comes to weight loss, but there are solid facts.

We still need to watch what we eat, especially when it comes to certain starchy foods.

Exercising every day will always be an important part of a diet plan, of course.

Any harmful parasites or plaque deposits must be addressed first, though, for the typical diet and exercise changes to work.

Beauty Topics: How to Use Beauty Care Products Effectively

April 25th, 2008 by Raymond Lam
by Raymond Lam

The secret to having beautiful skin is available to everyone not just the rich and famous; the information supplied here can help with your skin care but it needs to be carried out regularly. Unfortunately many women still feel that the only way they will achieve that beauty is by using invasive techniques like liposuction and plastic surgery for instance. Beauty care products however, are formulated to work more naturally with the skin and are within almost everyone’s budget with other health advantages as part of the package.

When we think of beauty care products for the skin we typically picture cold cream and anti-aging formulas but there are countless items that promote healthy, youthful skin and these may be some of the most important beauty care products on the market. With all the hard work our skin has to put up with, the least we can do is look after it.

The first and most important step in any skin care regimen is to cleanse your face to remove any makeup, dust and bacteria that it has encountered throughout the day. This part must be carried out with a quality face cleanser placed on a cotton pad moved in a circular pattern then washed with clean warm water, drying with a soft towel but take care not to rub the skin when you do this.

The cleanser can affect the PH balance of your skin so the nest step is to use a toner which will restore this balance. Once you have completed this step you will need to moisturize the skin with a cream or lotion as this will return its glow and make it supple. Beauty care products that moisturize the skin also form a barrier to lock in the moisture so the skin does not dry out.

Every week, at least once but preferably twice, it is recommended you get rid of dead skin cells by exfoliation or a natural peel, which is becoming a more popular skin care routine. You must not forget however, that when you carry out this exfoliation you make sure that you continue with a complete cleanse and tone afterwards.

If you suffer with lines, wrinkles or puffiness around your eyes then a good beauty care product suggestion is the use of eye creams which will improve the delicate skin in this region. Along with these simple steps above ensure you drink plenty of water, exercise regularly and eat a nutrient rich diet, all of which will help keep your skin looking youthful, radiant and beautiful. It is important to remember that we are covered in skin from our head to our toes and rely on it to protect us, in order to make sure that we maintain the health of this organ we want to look after all of it.

One of the first things that you can do is actually reduce or eliminate the amount of fatty foods you are currently eating. Doing this not only will you be reducing the amount of fat you are in taking, but also means that your body will have far less to get rid off. Along with reducing fatty foods, reduce the amount of salt you consume but increase your intake of green vegetables instead.

If you are not currently doing any form of exercise, then the next thing that one should be considering is adding some form of exercise into your daily routine. These have been shown as being extremely effective in helping you to lose body fat a lot more quickly. But you do not just have to do these kinds of exercises there are plenty of other types worth considering.

When you are setting up your exercise regime along with cardio vascular exercises you need to incorporate some kind of weight and strength exercises as well. This will further help to build up muscle mass, which not only protects the joints but can also help you to burn off fat more quickly as well.

Another way of ensuring that you lose fat but increase muscle mass in your body is by ensuring that have included foods in your diet that have high levels of protein in them. The reason why water is so important is that helps to ensure that your body remains hydrated and so that it works properly. As our bodies are in fact made up of around 70% of water if we were to go without food this would not be too difficult on it but not having enough water can seriously effect the way in which it works. If you can drink cold water as this will, help to prevent you from feeling as hungry especially if you have cut down on the number of calories you are consuming. Plus by drinking sufficient amounts of water, it can help with eliminating the fat that you are in fact trying to lose.

Above we have shown you the best ways when it comes to fat loss, but if you want, you could try using supplements as well. However, you need to be wary as not all supplements are approved and may contain ingredients that could actually be detrimental to your health. Certainly, there are some, which contain ephedra that are harmful to anyone who suffers from heart or other medical conditions. So be wary and discuss the possibility of using such supplements with your doctor first.

Tips – pH and energy levels

April 25th, 2008 by Amanda Marlenti
by Amanda Marlenti

Did you know that your blood has a pH level? pH is the measurement of how acid or alkaline something is. The pH level scale runs from 1 to 14 with 1 serving as “very acidic” 7 being “neutral” and 14 being “very alkaline”. In fact your bloodstream goes to great lengths to maintain a pH level of 7.35 to 7.45, slightly alkaline. Why is this important? Among many reasons why your body strives for this balance starts with your energy level. The pH miracle diet will help balance your body and increase your energy.

Have you ever been poor quality of fuel in your car, after the execution of the premium on fuel? There is a difference of acceleration, handling, and overall performance, which is directly linked to the quality of fuel you put in the tank. Your body is a finely tuned machine. Like other types of machines, parts must be maintained by the operation of the fuel. The best fuel for your body is a mix, the more acid than alkaline batteries. What difference does this make?

It all starts in the bloodstream. Think of the bloodstream as a superhighway with stops all over the body. Red blood cells are the commuting traffic riding along the bloodstream in a hurry to get to work. These red blood cells each have a negative charge on them, and this keeps them from getting into fender benders and collisions in the bloodstream. When the negative charge is stripped away from the red blood cells, they cluster together and can cause gridlock and bottlenecks in the bloodstream. In short, the traffic in the bloodstream isn’t flowing as smoothly and it causes everything to slow down. If you’ve ever been stuck in freeway traffic you know how frustrating this is.

This stress on the body caused a domino effect that ultimately undermines the extraordinary energy and makes you tired and sluggish. Acid is the culprit in the bloodstream jam. When acid is introduced into the bloodstream eats away at the negative charge that surrounds each of red blood cells and causes all kinds of problems. How can this be prevented? The answer is very simple and starts with what’s in your stomach. Red blood cells are created by the food you eat. When working in the stomach to digest food, which leaves behind residues natural acids. His body eliminates this waste through urine and sweat, but there comes a time when the accumulation of waste is too large to remove.

What does your body do with all of the acidic waste it can’t get rid off? The answer is quite shocking; it stores it in your body! The cells in your body are mostly alkaline and this acid waste starts to attack and destroy these cells. A lot of energy is expelled keeping the waste from doing detrimental damage to your body, but this fight can only go on for so long. Eventually the build up is so great that the cells deteriorate and cause energy depletion and leaves the body open to disease.

How can we avoid this slow death? A higher level of energy helps prevent opportunistic diseases and ensures strong cellular regeneration. Making changes in your diet is a huge step backwards in this breakdown of his body at the same time boosts their energy level. The choices you as you eat a large extent determine how much of this acid waste is stored in your body. The more alkaline their food choices are the least of this waste will be accumulated in the body, to tilt the balance in favor of good health.

The old adage “You are what you eat” is absolutely true. Controlling the amount of food you ingest alkaline that you give your body a chance. Find books and lists that identify which foods are alkaline and which ones which are acidic. limiting your consumption of acidic foods and increase your consumption of food with an alkaline pH of the miracle diet, you can increase your stamina, endurance and overall performance of your body machine.

April 24th, 2008 by Barbara Williamson
by Barbara Williamson

Is stress getting to you? Want to relax and get a better perspective on life? Massage therapy may just be the thing for you. Getting frequent massages can easily give you relief from mental and physical stress, restoring your sense of well-being and preparing you to face your world with confidence. So how can massage therapy help you? Lets take a look.

* Massage therapy can reduce your anxiety and stress

It is a well known fact that in today’s society, stress is known to be a culprit of of many health issues. It is also very treatable. Relieving yourself of stress can add years to your life as well as help you feel better. For those of you who have had a massage, you know how relaxing it is. (For those of you who haven’t yet experienced massage, get ready for one of the best experiences of your life.) Under the hands of a good massage therapist, your body will begin to let go of all the stress you’ve been hanging on to. Your muscles will begin to relax and your anxiety and stress will start meting away.

* Reduce your pain

Most of you know that a long grueling day of work can leave you with tense, tight and sore muscles. You can reduce this pain by relaxing with a massage. Plus, a good massage can increase circulation to those tense areas, further relieving your pain. Massage is also known to help relieve the pain of tension headaches.

* Improve the functioning of the immune system

Current research indicates that when a person receives a massage there is an increase in the their white cell count. The white blood cells help your body defend against diseases. By getting a massage frequently, you can boost your immune system which, in turn, helps you stay well.

* Improves your circulation

As the muscles of your body start to loosen up, your blood flow improves. Better circulation gives you a nice natural surge of energy that can help you get through the day. Also, if you get a massage regularly, it will increase bloodflow in the skin which has the potential to downplay the appearance of cellulite.

* Decreases your blood pressure

Do you have high blood pressure? Research was conducted that showed when a person is simply touched, their blood pressure dramatically decreases immediately. In combination this with the other benefits of massage therapy like relaxed muscles, pain reduction, relief from anxiety and improved circulation, you have a valuable way to maintain an acceptable blood pressure level. (Something to take into consideration, if you have low blood pressure, you should be careful at the completion of your massage as you might be lightheaded.)

* Improved mood

Massage therapy has proven to be an excellent way to lift one’s mood and promote a sense of well-being. For example, massage has been used as treatment of depression for women who have experienced the loss of a child. If massage helped these women with their depression, you can be hopeful that it can improve your mood as well.

I’m sure you see how massage therapy can help you feel better, but you may be wondering if you can afford it. Here is an easy solution: get in touch with massage schools in your area. Massage schools always have student clinics and you can get an excellent massage for a really good rate. Go ahead and treat yourself. Call and set yourself up with a massage therapist today. You will start feeling better in no time.

Quick Tips for Overcoming Even Serious Depression

April 24th, 2008 by Christine Sutherland
by Christine Sutherland

Depression is the stand-out winner when it comes to picking the worse of all mental disorders. Why? Well partly because of the sheer number of people affected (experts estimate between 30-95%, dependent upon age group) and partly because depression can be fatal. And very much because it’s not just the sufferer who suffers. Depression has a deep and brutal impact on the whole family.

All of that is bad enough to take the prize. But depression is even worse than that because of one thing. The rapid rate at which it’s increasing.

This increase is well known and well documented, with the WHO (World Health Organisation) reporting that on current increases, by the year 2020 depression will overtake the cardio-vascular diseases (like heart disease for example) as the most expensive health item on the planet.

So naturally there’s a lot of interest in doing something about depression.

The big problem is that research and development of treatment for depression is being driven by, you guessed it, the big drug companies. And the best answer they’ve been able to come up with so far is the class of drugs known as the SSRI’s (serotonin selective re-uptake inhibitors) that work by keeping your serotonin active in your brain for longer before being “reabsorbed”.

But the SSRI’s have been around long enough for enough experts to review the drug companies’ research and report that basically their story on the SSRI’s is pretty much a crock. It’s not surprising that now we know the SSRI’s are no more effective than sugar pills, many doctors flatly refuse to prescribe them.

SO THE DRUG DOESN’T WORK, NOW WHAT?

That’s a great question! I’m not saying all drugs are useless for depression, because in rare cases there are certain drugs that sure can be helpful, but it’s not the SSRI’s! The good news is that a newly-developed Australian treatment for depression, backed by a boatload of excellent research around the world, has proven to provide very fast, and very easy relief for this awful disorder.

It’s very important to share exactly what this approach is – too many people depend on it. Firstly it’s important to take an inventory of at least 17 lifestyle mistakes that are known to have the potential to actually create depression. Secondly it’s important to use a set of therapy techniques that actively eliminate depressed thinking styles in the brain. This is absolutely NOT cognitive behaviour therapy, which is certainly no better than the SSRI’s! These new techniques are known as BMSA (brief, multi-sensory activation) and represent a true breakthrough in neurophysiology.

WHAT DETAILS CAN I GET ON THIS NEW TREATMENT STRATEGY?

To do its job an article has to be short and to the point, and I hope I’ve done that here. If you’d like to learn more, you can do so quite freely with a range of free resources that step you through the crucial lifestyle factors, and also step you through a simple BMSA treatment so you can see for yourself how quickly and easily you can gain relief.

Please look out for the free ebooks “17 Solutions” and “Stop Wishing and Start GETTING!” Between them they deal not only with the lifestyle factors involved in depression, but with the actual BMSA process itself.

To grab both these free books you’ll need to become a member of TopLifeSolutions.com. But that’s free too! And not only that, you’ll receive free ongoing support videos and support newsletter, all helping you toward greater health and wellbeing.

For medical practitioners and mental health professionals, more information including research papers is available on www.bmsa-int.com, a site which provides up-to-date information and support for clinicians interested in integrating more efficacious therapy practice.

Naturally Lower Your Cholesterol

April 24th, 2008 by Scott Soloff
by Kathryn Soloff

Over 26 million Americans are affected by high cholesterol. High cholesterol is the primary contributing factor for heart disease. There are many factors that contribute to high cholesterol.

High cholesterol is so serious that it is responsible for 70% of all heart disease. It is also a leading killer of men and women that are over the age of 45. It is also a leading cause of death worldwide.

Having high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) will form plaque in the arteries. The result of this is atherosclerosis. It has been proven that lifestyle changes can prevent or lower high cholesterol.

Lifestyle changes that include eating a diet low in saturated fat, increased physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight will help to lower high cholesterol. A diet that is high in fiber helps to lower high cholesterol levels.

High fiber foods include whole grains, beans, vegetables and fresh fruit. High fiber foods keep your digestive tract regular, satisfy you and also provide good nutrition. High fiber foods actually block cholesterol from being absorbed into the intestinal tract. Because of this, bad cholesterol is expelled with normal excretion.

There are very good reasons to lower your cholesterol naturally. Statin drugs, the ones most prescribed by doctors, have serious side effects. Statin drugs are effective and work in a short period of time. Unfortunately, one pays a big price by using these drugs.

It is well established that statin drugs cause serious liver damage. Patients that use this medication are required to have a routine blood test every two months.

Statin drugs can cause muscle pain, disease and the breakdown of muscles. It also causes weakness and can create difficulties with walking.

It also can cause the loss of memory and clarity. It occasionally causes confusion and possibly amnesia. It can be responsible for sexual dysfunction and irritability.

The other side effects caused by statin drugs include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, fever, sleeplessness and headaches.

This medication is also responsible for depleting essential nutrients important for the heart and brain.

It is quite possible to naturally lower your cholesterol. The good news is that this can be accomplished without experiencing any harmful side effects.

Here are somethings that you can do:

1/ You can start with exercising between 30 minutes and an hour each day. Exercise can be very helpful in lowering cholesterol levels. Regular exercise will help to increase the good cholesterol. Exercise will also help to lower the bad cholesterol. What it comes down to is that exercise will help you without harmful side effects.

2/ Change your diet.

It helps to understand that high cholesterol does not occur in a vacuum. The largest contributing factors are our diets and lack or activity. These factors are more important than heredity. Heredity counts only to the point that our parents pass their lifestyles onto us.

As mentioned above, it is essential to eat a diet high in fiber. This includes whole grains, beans, vegetables and fresh fruit. It is the fiber from these foods that bind with the cholesterol and carries it from our system.

3/ Reduce or avoid foods rich in fat. This includes red meat and dairy.

4/ Herbal supplements.

Using natural herbal supplements can be very helpful in lowering our high cholesterol. Research shows that natural herbal supplements help to lower bad cholesterol.

Ancient Chinese medicine incorporates the use of herbs. Traditional Chinese therapy produces very good results for lowering high cholesterol. Thousands of years of Chinese medicine have developed herbal treatments that are natural, safe and effective.

There are major differences between western medicine and Chinese medicine. Unlike conventional medicine, the Chinese herbs are very mild. They do not have any harmful side effects. Because they are mild, it appears to take months to work.

The herbs begin to work immediately but the visible results may take months. The Chinese herbs do not shock or jar our systems. The change is a gradual one. As an additional benefit, liver function begins to improve within a couple of months. A simple blood test will bear this out.

These herbal treatments have been around for centuries. However, if you are taking medication or are under a physicians care, please consult with your doctor first.

Resources – pH miracle diet critics

April 24th, 2008 by Amanda Marlenti
by Amanda Marlenti

When something becomes popular, it invites criticism from other sources. The recent popularity of pH miracle diet is no different. As the program has gained adherents, he has earned as much criticism from different individuals.

The main criticism of the diet is that it encourages people to become vegetarians and vegans. Critics say the scheme, especially with its omission of dairy products (vegetarian source of protein), is dangerously low in protein. However, this criticism comes from the misconception that they need huge amounts of protein. The recent popularity of diets low in carbohydrates (which are in fact only diets rich in protein) has re-cemented this myth in the minds of many people. Health has become the equivalent of eating red meat and dairy products.

However, there are many sources of natural and healthy proteins that don’t have the harmful acidic effects of red meat and dairy products. The truth is, most people get too much protein and not too little. Women require about 45 grams of protein per day, and men need 55 grams. Beans contain at least 8 grams of protein per half cup. So it is really quite easy to get enough protein on a vegetarian diet.

Another criticism related to this issue is calcium. Many people equate milk with strong bones. However, American women consume an average of two kilograms of milk per day, and yet 30 million of them to develop osteoporosis. If the milk helped make bones stronger, then the opposite would be true. A study by the Cornell-trained nutritionist Amy Joy Lanou showed that there was no specific link between dairy products and bone health in children and young adults. There are plenty of sources of calcium available in alkalinization categories of foods which provide protection against osteoporosis.

Many critics also argue that the emphasis on vegetables and fresh food is the real reason behind the success that people receive from the diet. The pH miracle diet suggests eating almost 70 percent of vegetables and fruits acceptable. Critics ignore the importance of the pH balance of the diet.

However, there have been many people who have experienced excellent results after elimination of wheat, a food acid. Wheat is not a food that one normally associates with the disease; however, the elimination of wheat has been a boon to many people who have suffered the symptoms of over-acidified food. The amount of alkalization of vegetables in the diet is going to do a good person, whether or not to take the rest of the diet to heart. In eating from the list of foods alkaline, you must improve your health, no matter how tight you are on diet.

This leads to another very critical of the book. Many people argue that the regime miracle program pH is too strict for everyday life. The elimination of foods, such as animal protein, milk and wheat seem overwhelming for people. They can not penetrate through a whole day without eating something one of these food groups. The idea of sticking to a diet which is mainly based plant seems too rigid and strict. However, many people who use the pH miracle diet have seen positive results without being 100% with the strict rules of food.

Like many other diets, diet, the pH miracle describes step towards better health. The emphasis here is on action. It is unreasonable to expect anyone to make a 180-degree change in his eating habits overnight. The adoption of a slower approach to changing your diet will create more good results. If the plan is followed word for word, it is difficult at the beginning

Anti Aging Products: Vital Ingredients

April 24th, 2008 by Raymond Lam
by Raymond Lam

Vanity plays a large part in the use of popular anti-ageing skin care products and treatments; there is nothing wrong with wanting to continue looking young as you get older, in fact it is quite a healthy aim. Skin is important so a great deal of effort goes into the preparation of beauty products especially those that increase the production of collagen, which is the primary protein in skin; collagen is so abundant, it makes up about a quarter of the total protein content of structural protein found in skin. This area of anti-ageing treatments is connected to another group of products that help people to look young; this group is called antioxidants which are natural chemicals found in many foods and our body.

One of the best known anti-oxidants is vitamin C and despite continual research, no-one body involved can decide just exactly how much our body should consume on a daily basis. Unfortunately all skin care treatments that use vitamin C have the problem of atmospheric oxidization to contend with once the product is exposed to the air.

Other skin care treatments which mimic the effects of vitamin C are being tried all the time which are hoped to be more stable in the atmosphere and also cheaper to produce. However, these anti-ageing skin care treatments are not as effective vitamin C based products, although vitamin E and lipoic acid are also anti-oxidants and have similar effects.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant and is found in human blood; it helps build resistance against infection like cancer for example. Another of these is lipoic acid which is found in every cell of our body to help generate energy for us to live; it is also able to help reduce and restore the skin’s aging process.

Other compounds called phytochemicals have proved to be beneficial in the formulation of anti-ageing skin care products; they are removed from various plants. Another benefit of phytochemicals, like those of alpha-lipoic acid, is their ability to reduce the prevalence of certain cancers; these include:

*Prostate Cancer in Men

*Breast Cancer in Women (and occasionally men)

*Colon Cancer

These types of cancer are also becoming some of the most prevalent worldwide.

Surprisingly, the group of vitamins; B5, B6, and B12 have also shown that they can be used to help reduce the effects of ageing. The use of anti-ageing skin care products is a huge scientific field to research and has far greater potential than just producing goods that reduce the visible signs of age. Gradually, new discoveries will be made to advance our understanding of the aging process; each year, more is learnt about this topic so reducing the effects of age on the body is just a matter of time.

The amount of research going on in this field will undoubtedly bring results in time, hopefully bringing down the cost of these anti-ageing skin care products in addition to increasing their reliability. Scientific research into anti-aging products is still in the early stages but they should never be relied upon; it is doubtful if science can replace natural skin care remedies. Simple things that can make a difference in slowing the signs of ageing; these include physical activity, restful sleep, maintaining good dietary habits and removing stress from your life.

Two Different Ways of Buying A Discount Golf Club

April 23rd, 2008 by Peter De Vizard
by Peter De Vizard

To purchase a discount golf club you can do in a few different ways. The first method would be to purchase a well-known brand at a lower price than its actual price (on special). The second method would to purchase a clone of the well known brand named golf clubs. So, before you decide on how you buy your discount golf club, you may want to learn about the differences.

How to Buy A Cloned Golf Club

If you think that buying a clone of the original brand named golf club is the best option for you, then you may want to look at the PC market where cloning original designs is normal and has in fact, grown the market by its use. The end product should be quality and also play much as well as the original item. However, keep in mind, there may not be many extras available with cloned golf clubs, that would be available with original branded clubs.

A point to keep in mind is that a cloned golf club will use the same components as the original. They are also put together much like the original branded product, but will not have the luxury of the brand name which is what attracts some buyers. How it would last as compared to the original and possible guaranteed model would be proven on the course. As for most things you get what you pay for.

Discount golf clubs can save you a lot of especially if you are not a player who follows brands. Be sure the you have a way of checking that the clubs do not contain flaws or other defects that can make the price that you pay a waste of money. If defects are small, such as surface only, you may want to balance that against the price, and how serious you are as a player.

Discount golf clubs can save you a lot of especially if you are not a player who follows brands. If defects are small, such as surface only, you may want to balance that against the price, and how serious you are as a player.

A factor to look closely is if the discount golf club is being sold buy a registered dealer. Not from a person who has possibly just imported cheaper Asian “knock off” designs. This can be sold as just “as good as the original” but with slightly different names: eg Callaway would become “Collaway” and would be at unbelievable low prices.

Many times, the golf club manufactures would offer a discount club when a newer model becomes available on the market. The best way to watch for this is to read and follow magazines and reviews, then look to your local store for the previous model. They may want to move the stock to allow them to have the new model while its featured in the press.

Therefore it comes down to buyer beware with buying a discount golf club. You want to get the best deal possible at the same time the statement “buyer beware” – if it looks to good to be true it probably is.

How They Compare: Home Water Purifiers

April 23rd, 2008 by Trent Barrett
by Trent Barrett

Before buying a home water purifier, you should understand them. Purifiers are devices that will filter contaminants out of your tap water supply so you can drink pure, unadulterated water. When you compare home water purifiers, you’ll quickly discover that there is a great variety of difference between the types, both in how they look and function and in what contaminants they filter out of your water. You should always purchase the one that works best for you.

Start to compare home water purifiers by examining their function. Which ones work by filtering water in a special tank or pitcher, and which ones work by filtering the water directly from your tap? You’ll even find a few purifiers that work on the main line of your home, but these are generally used more for water softening and are uncommon otherwise. When choosing your home water purifier, think about what you need pure water for. Is it just to fill your bottled water containers, or do you need to be able to cook and make coffee with your purified water? Is your local water from a reasonably clean aquifer, or is it purified from the sludge of the East River? Answers to these questions will help you determine what you want filtered out of your water.

Make sure you compare how home water purifiers filter your water. There are a wide variety of methods used. The most common for home use is the activated carbon filter, followed by the reverse osmosis, the KDF-55, and the greensand iron filter. You are unlikely to find an ultraviolet filter; these are usually used in hospitals, not homes. The most common two for home use by far are activated carbon and reverse osmosis. These two types of home water purifiers work very differently and remove different contaminants.

Activated carbon home water purifiers use carbon’s extreme reactivity to other chemicals as a means for removing contaminants. Items dissolved in your water have a slight negative charge, and activated carbon has a slight positive charge. Because of this quality, activated carbon home water purifiers can easily remove impurities until the carbon has become saturated with the impurities. There are two basic types of activated carbon purifiers: the granular activated carbon (GAC) type or the powdered block carbon. Both are excellent, but the powdered block removes more. Activated carbon is known to remove chlorine, bad tastes and odors, radon, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like pesticides, sediments, and some heavy metals and hydrogen sulfide.

Reverse osmosis home water purifiers are much better purifiers, but they are also much slower and more difficult to use. They use the concept of an osmotic barrier – a thin membrane through which water can pass but contaminants may not. While activated carbon home water purifiers are typically attached to the water supply, reverse osmosis filters are used in a more passive system, such as a pitcher or water reservoir. If you have reverse osmosis water purification systems delivering water to your tap, you have a purification system attached to a reservoir, and the water is first run through an activated carbon filter and then through the osmotic system. Reverse osmosis removes different contaminants, such as arsenic, bacteria, viruses, chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, nitrates, bad tastes and smells, sediments, iron, and some VOCs and hydrogen sulfide.

Your choice in home water purifiers should be based on cost of installation, how you’ll be using your filter, and what the purifier removes. The purest water comes from the reverse osmosis filter, but both do an excellent job of delivering clean, pure-tasting water to your faucet.
