Why do people want to use chemical stimulants when they’re so bad for you? The causes of drug addiction are as varied as the variety of drugs that are available for use. There is no one cause for drug addiction just like there is no consistent profile of a drug user.

People who have a history of drug use or misuse in their families are certainly at greater risk for drug addiction problems. It has been shown over and over again that the children of alcohol addicted persons and drug-dependent persons are far more likely to exhibit addictive leanings than offspring of non-addicted mothers and fathers. This is commonly attributed largely to environmental causes and vicarious learning.

The offspring of those addicted to alcohol or drug abusers see their mothers and fathers escaping from problems abusing artificial stimulants.When they encounter problems themselves they are naturally more likely than their peers to reach for the same crutch.

This is not to say though that genetic reasons are immaterial. Certainly babies of dependent mothers can be born with a craving for alcohol or illicit drugs, and many think that the ‘addictive personality’ is something that is fixed in the genes of the addict.

Sometimes however there is no sad background tale behind addiction. Often with an addiction to prescription drugs, the addicted person commenced taking the medically prescribed drugs because they were overcoming some type of legitimate disease. Over time however they began to feel that they couldn’t do without their dose, and that if they stopped taking their meds, the pain would reappear.

People who have low self-esteem are certainly more prone to drug addiction. Such persons may feel they have no have control over over their lives and will turn to drugs as a way to cope. They often feel they can’t please the persons around them so they have to transform themselves in order to fit in. The change is made easier by abusing drugs because the artificial stimulants make them them into somebody and something that they are not. Stress is regularly cited as the number one reason of drug addiction.

Life is stressful for everyone. Some of us however are better able to cope with this than others. Some turn to drugs as an easy way to get passed their anxieties. Once a person starts consuming chemical stimulants to overcome trauma it can be hard to halt the cycle because the stresses are still there once the high is gone, so the user feels he or she needs more drugs to bring more support. That type of cycle can lead to long-term addiction.

Part of the reason for the high incidence of drug addiction is purely because they are so easily accessible. Even for those who don’t have a connection with their resident dealers of illicit drugs, alcohol and prescription drugs are easy to obtain and can prove just as effectual (and destructive).

So why do persons use drugs? The easy answer is that people use drugs in order to control their moods, but as to why some people need so badly to control their moods while other people manage to cope without artificial stimulants, there is no straightforward answer.

Drug abuse becomes a dependency when a person has a compulsive need to use drugs without care or respect for the consequences that might occur either bodily or emotionally.

There are so many unknowns with fibromyalgia. Experts are not sure what causes it. They don’t know what might cure it, if anything. They don’t know why it seems to affect women more than men. They often don’t even know you have it, and missed diagnoses are common.

So what do we know about fibromyalgia? It’s not arthritis, because arthritis involves the skeletal system, while fibromyalgia affects the muscular system. It’s a chronic condition, and it can last a long time, possibly even afflict you for your entire life.

People between the ages of 20 and 50 are prone to developing it. Four to six million Americans are afflicted with it. It keeps you from getting a good night’s sleep. Luckily, we also know that it’s a progressive disease.

There is hope on the horizon though, for the millions who live every day with constant pain and muscle stiffness. Research continues to find a cause for fibromyalgia and the hope is, once a caused has been identified, work can begin to find a cure.

Some experts are beginning to believe the underlying cause of fibromyalgia is related to disturbances in the endocrine system and the autonomic nervous system. More specifically, the stress response of both those systems.

The crossing over of the nervous system with the endocrine system, referred to as ‘neuroendocrine axis’, has been studied closely in relation to the sleep disturbances found in most fibromyalgia patients. Studies have shown that fibromyalgia patients have their non-REM sleep phase disturbed by alpha waves that shouldn’t be there, often keeping them from moving to stage 3 and stage 4 of sleep.

It’s during those stages that insulin growth factor is released. Since fibromyalgia sufferers often don’t reach those stages, it accounts for why a third of fibromyalgia patients have low levels of that hormone.

Artificially created disturbed non-REM sleep have also shown that some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia are produced by it. With alpha waves intruding when they shouldn’t, it is not surprising why many fibromyalgia sufferers have night after night of ‘non-refreshing’ sleep.

Other endocrine and neurological abnormalities they’ve found include elevated levels of certain neurotransmitters in the cerebrospinal fluid that enhance pain perception, up to three times higher than normal levels. Fibromyalgia patients also tend to have lower than normal cortisol production.

While everything sounds scientific, the bottom line is that they are slowly finding out why people are suffering from fibromyalgia. No one knows how long it may take to pinpoint the cause exactly, but it should give hope to those suffering from it. Of course, then they can start looking for a cure.

Safety Concerns When Using a TENS Unit

TENS units are considered safe when used properly. However, there are certain places on the body where they should not be used. The electrodes should never be placed near the eyes or mouth. They also should not be placed on the temples. In fact, it is best not to use them on the face at all, as they could easily be placed too close to one of these sensitive areas.

The front of the neck is another place that the device should not be used. If you have any open wounds, do not put the electrode on them. Never place the device over the belly of a pregnant woman. In fact, pregnant women should not use a TENS device without first consulting with their obstetrician.

Once you have been trained by your doctor or physical therapist as to the best way to use the TENS device in your training program, make sure you resist the temptation to turn the frequency up too high. Remember, there is a limit to the pain relief you can experience with at TENS unit. Putting the frequency too high will actually cause you to have more pain. If you notice your muscles contracting near the electrodes, it is set too high. Otherwise, as long as you are properly trained and have followed these safety rules, you can use a TENS unit to reduce the pain from a past injury as you continue your workout routine.

Most books on nutrition assume everybody is the same. But it ain’t so. We’re all different. Yet we are told to avoid fat and eat fruits and vegetables as if there’s no difference between us.

Fat is blamed for everything. Heart disease. Cancer. Overweight. Rising petrol prices. You name it. Instead we should switch to carbohydrates – fruit, veg, grains etc.

Fat Is A Good Guy

Well let me tell you about a medically approved diet for some children. 90% of the calories on this diet come from fat. The kids are normal weight and their cholesterol levels only a tad higher than usual. These children have epilepsy and this diet controls their seizures.

The children might eat a meal consisting of chicken and carrots with butter and double cream. Not exactly your standard fare, but for the children and their families, it’s what they require.

I can see you’re not convinced. You think that case is special. For everyone else we can state that fruits and vegetables are beneficial and that fats should be avoided.

It’s not so simple. For some nutritionists the number one dietary deficiency is …..fat.

Saturated fat from dairy foods and meat are not to be avoided like the plague. They may not be the healthiest fats to eat, but humans have evolved to eat it. The problem fats are the ones that come from eating the products of the fast food industry. This leads us to eat far too much trans fats and omega 6 fats and far too little of the omega 3 fats derived from oily fish.

When Vegetables Are Bad

Glasgow University professor Kenneth McColl has given a warning that vegetable consumption could be behind the UK’s fastest growing cancer. He and his 10-strong research team believe that the three fold increase in throat cancers over the last 20 years could be down to nitrate fertilisers.

The answer is not to buy organic. These too contain a lot of nitrate.

I could mention all the naturally occurring toxins, carcinogens and mutagens found in fruits and vegetables. But I won’t. At least not for this article.

I could even mention those that are especially sensitive to carbohydrates. They must limit their intake of vegetables and fruits because they cause their blood sugar levels to swing wildly. But we’ll leave that alone.

I might even refer to those unfortunate people that have a sensitivity to foods like oranges, grapefruit, onions and tomatoes.

And there are those that are allergic to aspirin. The chemical salicylate which is found in aspirin is also found in high amounts in fruits and vegetables.

Am I seriously telling you to avoid fruits and vegetables and eat fatty foods instead? No, certainly not. For most people this is excellent advice. The point I’m making is that you are an individual. You have your own dietary requirements and needs. There is nobody on earth like you, so don’t let anybody else tell you what to eat. Get to know your own body’s needs. Listen to what it is trying to tell you.

Don’t listen to nutrition ‘experts.’ Listen to your body.

As interest in all aspects of natural health and wellness grows, the use of essential oils is becoming more widespread. However, many individuals that are just learning about aromatherapy’s possibilities sometimes don’t know exactly what essential oils are. Well here’s a little primer that get you started in using these wonderful gifts of nature in your own life! Pure essential oils are complex mixtures of aromatic compounds produced by plants. These are the essences that give plants their wonderful scents; it is these easily evaporated compounds that you smell when inhaling the aroma from a rose, or a pine tree, or a bunch of fresh basil.

Pure essential oils are distilled from oil sacs found in most structures of plants – the leaves, roots, flowers and more. Almost all essential oils are made up of several, sometimes hundreds of various molecular compounds. The combination and ratios of these compounds give each oil it’s particular aromatic and medicinal properties. Essential oils are not just a by-product of plant growth; plants use these oils in a manner similar to those prescribed in medical aromatherapy: to fight infections from microbes, fungi and viruses; to protect themselves from animal invaders; and some suspect they may be used for chemical communication between plants of the same species. While essential oils come from the plant world, they are particularly suited to use in natural health, wellness and fitness programs as their chemistry is remarkably compatible with our own; they are easily absorbed into our bodies, even at the cellular level.

To produce essential oils of therapeutic quality – those that retain as much of the original plant essence in its original state as possible – the most gentle extraction method that will draw the oil from a particular plant is most desirable. Extraction methods range from Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extraction – being the most gentle (and most expensive), to pressing (as for extracting the oil from citrus rinds) and steam distillation, to solvent extraction. Steam distillation is most common, and as a result of only requiring heating to just above the boiling point of water, is considered gentle enough for most essential oils.

Humankind has used plants for healing for many thousands of years, and it’s from this tradition of that the use of aromatic plant compounds is medicine began. Documented use of aromatic plants dates back to near 4500 B.C., though it was in the hands of the ancient Egyptians that the use of oils and plant aromatics was truly developed. Oils were used in the embalming process, in medicine and in purification rituals. In 1922, when King Tut’s tomb was opened, 50 alabaster jars made to contain nearly 350 liters of oil were discovered. There are also over 200 references to aromatics, incense and ointments in the Old and New Testaments; Frankincense, Myrrh, Galbanun, Cinnamon, Cassia, Rosemary, Hyssop and Spikenard are noted for being used for anointing rituals and healing of the sick.

The first modern-day distillation of essential oil was performed by the Persian philosopher Avicenna (980-1037 A.D.) who extracted the essence of rose petals through the ‘enfleurage’ process. His discovery and subsequent use of a wonderful perfume substance eventually lead him to write a book on the healing properties of essential oil of Rose. By the mid 1500′s, many aromatic botanicals were being distilled in Europe and the Middle East. It was in the middle of the last century that the term ‘Aromatherapy’ was coined by French cosmetic chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse – Dr. Gattefosse discovered the healing properties of Lavender essential oil when, after burning his hands in a laboratory accident, he submersed them in the flower’s essential oil. His amazingly speedy recovery prompted him to write his book ‘Aromatherapy’ in 1937.

Combating infectious illnesses like flu, bacterial and viral infections has been noted by medical aromatherapists as the most promising use of essential oils. Other applications include strong anti-inflammatory effects, powerful antioxidant properties, tissue regeneration, and cleansing of various organs and systems. Many psychological effects have also been studied, including sharpening of one’s mental faculties and bringing calm in both adults and children. Here, it is important to find a qualified practitioner or trusted source of information to find the right oil and how to best employ it. Using the wrong oil will likely have no effects, and incorrectly using certain oils can be dangerous. There are many quality texts available online or at your library or bookstore.

The three primary modes of using essential oils are the following: Topical application (most often diluted in a carrier oil such as Almond oil, Hazelnut, Olive or other ‘fatty acid’) most often for muscular aches and pains and support for skin conditions and rejuvenation. Inhalation is commonly used for the psychological effects of oils – the olfactory sense organs being directly tied to the brain’s emotional centers. Inhalation is also successfully employed for sinus and bronchial congestion along with other breathing ailments. In certain cases, ingestion is prescribed – capsules of peppermint essential oil have been shown effective in scientific studies on the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, a debilitating condition thought to be the result of rampant bacterial grown in the intestines. The list of the proven efficacy of essential oils continues to grow. There are many good texts available to education yourself, and a growing number of professional practitioners in the field. If you’d like to incorporate essential oils in your own health and wellness program, a little research surrounding your own needs will lead you in the right direction. Essential oils are powerful medicine – be safe, understand what you’re doing, and you’ll likely find aromatherapy can support your own personal needs in a fun and pleasantly aromatic way.
