Sinusitis vs. Common Cold: Which is Which?

August 4th, 2008 by Paul Tamens
by Paul Tamens

For many people who suffer from sinusitis or the common cold it is difficult to identify the differences between the two. Both ailments have symptoms and conditions that are very similar to each other. However, the root cause between the two conditions are different and as such, treating the two conditions effectively will be different as well.

Sinusitis a condition that is typically caused by allergies can seem almost the same as the common cold if you don?t know the differences. Sinusitis and the common cold can cause coughing, sneezing and a case of a runny nose. Sinusitis and the common cold can also cause pains and aches in various parts of the body. Sinusitis and the common cold can both make the patient feel tired and fatigued.

With such major similarities between sinusitis and the common cold, is it possible for you to be able to tell the difference? It is possible. However, you must know what it is you are looking for. The first area where these two ailments differ is how they develop. The common cold comes from a contracted virus passed from person to person. When the virus is attacked by the body?s immune system, the common cold reveals itself in the symptoms that we come to associate it with.

Sinusitis is caused by the inflammation of the sinuses, which are located in the nasal cavity. This inflammation can have many causes including a common cold. However, there are many other triggers of sinusitis that are not related to the common cold. For instance, one of the more common cases of sinusitis occurs as a result of an allergic reaction from pollen. Sinusitis can also be caused by bacteria as well.

One way that you can tell the difference between the two illnesses is to look at how long you have the symptoms. If the symptoms last for only a week or so, it is likely that you have a cold. There is no cure for the common cold. The body?s immune system will fight off and kill the virus on its own. If the symptoms last for more than a week, then it?s possible that you have a case of sinusitis.

The symptoms that show up in the eyes also distinguish between the common cold and sinusitis. The common cold usually has no influence on the eyes. Sinusitis has a major influence on the eyes. The eyes are puffy and swells up rapidly. The eyes also scratch and become watery. Your face will also feel very uncomfortable. If you track how bad the symptoms are you may even be able to track the source of the allergic reaction as well as the symptoms will trigger up worse when you are exposed to whatever is causing the inflammation.

Treatment for sinusitis vs. treatment for a common cold is different as well. The only way you can cure a common cold is to give yourself time to let the immune system eliminate the virus. There is no medication or any medical cure available for the common cold. Sinusitis can be cured through treatment as well as limiting your exposure to whatever is causing the condition. For instance, if sinusitis is being caused by an allergic reaction to pollen, if you limit your exposure to pollen you can cure the ailment.

Do You Drink Bottled Water? Think Twice Before Your Do

August 4th, 2008 by Marlene Affeld
by Marlene Affeld

Do you wish to live in a way that protects our childrens future? Do you want to live in the greenest world possible with a conscience, respect and appreciation for the environment?

The majority of Americans have a strong sense of environmental and social responsibility. We endeavor to make environmentally beneficial choices in many aspects of our daily living, yet we ignore one of the major contributors to the plight of the planet.

Worldwide in excess of one billion people do not have an uncontaminated source of clean drinking water, this is in excess of 1/6 of the world population, however, as Americans, spend billions of dollars yearly for the convenience of drinking from a plastic bottle instead of a water tap. We should be ashamed.

1.5 million tons of plastic are consumed to bottle water annually. It takes in excess of 25 times the amount of water to make each plastic bottle than the bottle contains. 300 million gallons of bottled water are imported to the United States yearly. This is unacceptable waste.

In America bottled water is often simply an indulgence. in spite of our justifications, it is not a harmless indulgence. Bottled water is an environmental nightmare. Three decades ago bottled water barely survived as a business in the United States. Today Americans spentd more on “designer” bottled water than we spent on sports tickets or iPods – $15 billion in 2007. The expected United States expenditure for bottled water will be $16 billion a year before the end of the decade.

As a nation we drink more than 30 billion single-serving bottles of water per year. Bottled water is the fastest growing beverage industry in the world, valued at $22 billion a year. Less than 15% of plastic bottles are recycled, the rest end up in the waste system and cost America’s major cities in excess of 70 million per year to handle processing and landfill expenditures. America yearly produces in excess of 800,000 tons of plastic bottle pollution that substantially magnifies global warming.

in 2007, Americans trashed more than 38 billion plastic water bottles, approximately $1 billion worth of plastic that could have been recycled. That’s an unforgivable waste, especially considering 1.5 million barrels of oil – enough to power 100,000 cars for a year – were consumed to manufacture these bottles. And that’s not even including the oil and gas required for shipping and delivering this huge volume of liquid.

If you are spending money on bottled water, you are basically purchasing plastic, which is manufactured from petroleum. When we purchase a bottle of water, what we’re often purchasing is the bottle its self. One of the essential problems with bottled water production is the reliance on fossil fuels. From packaging to transportation, bottled water relies on oil, using 17 million barrels of oil and producing massive amounts of carbon dioxide every year.

In the United States alone, we are hauling 1 billion liters of water around a week in ships trains and trucks. That is a weekly giant convoy equivalent to 37,800 18 wheelers. Water weighs 8 1/3 pounds a gallon. It is so heavy you cannot fill an 18 wheeler with bottled water–you have to allow empty space.

There is an simple eco friendly solution. Tap water is much less expensive. As a reporter for the NY Times pointed out, almost all municipal water in America is so good that nobody needs to import a single bottle from Italy or France or the Fiji Islands.

Clean and pure drinking water should be public and inexpensive. The more the wealthy opt out of drinking tap water, the less political support and funds there will be for investing in developing, maintaining and repairing America’s public water supply. That would be a dreadful loss.

Access to affordable, pure water is basic to a nations health. In Fiji, a state-of-the-art factory spins out more than a million bottles a day of the trendiest bottled water on the U.S. market, while more than half the people in Fiji do not have a pure or dependable source of drinking water. Therefore it is easier for the average American in Seattle or Boston to quench their thirst with refreshing Fiji water than it is for the majority of people in Fiji.

If you decide to get your recommended eight to ten glasses a day from bottled water, you could spend up to $1,500 or more every year. The same amount of tap water would cost pennies a day. Recent studies show that many brands of bottled water fail to meet industry guidelines and the cost of even inferior quality bottled water can grow quite high.

A lot of bottled water is really just plain tap water. Several bottled water companies package tap water into plastic bottles, then sell them to you at prices higher than gas and increasing just as rapidly. Aquafina, as an example, has sucessfully been pressured into correcting its labels to advise consumers that Aquafina water comes from tap water. Why do we not just drink tap water? In fact, more than a quarter of bottled water is just processed tap water.

Plastic containers leach dangerous chemicals. Have you considered why your plastic bottle of water has a warning on the label telling you not to reuse it? The longer you use that bottle, the more likely it is to leach hazarous chemicals into your water.

There is a solution. If you are not confident in your local water supply or wish to safely filter tap water when on the go, carbon-filtered tap water os safer and costs much less than bottled water. According to the Environmental Working Group, carbon filtration of tap water will dramatically lower levels of toxic by products; it is also 10 to 20 times less expensive than bottled water, and does not produce the waste and pollution associated with the packaging and transport of bottled water.

A portable water filter is a perfect solution for water filtration on the go. A portable water filter allows anyone to filter their own water, no matter where they travel; across town or around the world. A portable water filter allows you to free yourself from any unpleasant taste, additives or contaminates while protecting the environment and your pocketbook. Get the whole family involved. A five member family could save well over $7,500.00 a year.

Stop being unwitting victims of manipulative advertising. When a entire industry is built up by overwhelming us with a product we do not need, when an entire industry is based on packaging and presentation, not the product, it is worth asking how that happened and what the future impact is upon our precious planet.

US Visitors: Summer time Driving Tips

August 3rd, 2008 by Suchi V
by Suchi V

Foreign visitors whether heading out on a weekend US road trip or planning a long family vacation on the road you must take some precautions to have a great experience. Your vacation can be ruined if you encounter trouble while driving. Before you start off on your trip, check out these travel tips.

1. Tires must be checked periodically. They lose air pressure every month. An optimum tire pressure is required to maintain the proper contact between the road and the tire. Your car’s fuel economy can be improved if you maintain the manufacturer recommended pressure in your tires.

2. Follow the recommended schedule for an oil change. Different types of oils are suggested for different weather conditions. Thicker oil may be more suitable during summer months. The coolant/antifreeze ratio must be 50/50.

3. If needed top off all the fluids and examine the belts and hoses for cracks and wear. If your battery is between 3-5 years old get it tested. It can be strained in hot weather and it is safer to replace it than be stranded in the middle of nowhere.

4. Auto Club memberships can be very helpful during such trips. They can assist with tire changes, locked doors, towing etc. Take your membership card with you. If you have a newer car check with your dealer if road side assistance is included from the manufacturer.

5. Always have an emergency kit in your truck. The kit can contain basic tools, food, water, jumper cables, first aid kit and a flashlight. Auto stores sell fully assembled kits.

6. Pack a small cooler with bottled water, crackers, cereal bars, fruit, milk etc., to keep you and your family hydrated and hunger-free. Refill your cooler at gas stations and rest stops so you will always have food available. Sodas and salty snacks can make you more thirsty.

7. Always obey the rules of the road. Do not drive if you are sleepy or tired. Use seatbelts always and strap children in car seats.

An investment in a trusted visitor health can cover you for medical expenses from illnesses or injuries. Have a great summer vacation!

Effectively Treating Wounds and Scars with Essential Oils

August 3rd, 2008 by Tarah Cech
by Peggy Thorton

Pure essential oils have a long history of use in natural skin care. These wonderful phytochemicals provide a great breadth of natural, medicinal components well-known for healing damaged skin, as well as reducing the appearance of old scars from wounds, acne and other incidents. Essential oil blends for these applications are gentle, safe for regular use, and have a wonderful aroma to boot!

There are a few primary oils used in skin repair; additional oils may be added to your liking (to improve aroma, or add further skin-supportive properties), but here, we’ll concentrate just on the commonly used oils for skin damage. First, and possibly most important, is Helichrysum Italicum, also known as Everlasting. This oil with a lovely earthy aroma is distilled from the brightly-colored, daisy-like flowers of a strongly aromatic herb native to the Mediterranean region. Helichrysum is one of the most highly regarded oils in aromatherapy for it’s broad range of healing properties for body tissues. It is strongly anti-inflammatory, and has a high concentration of regenerative diketones found only in this oil. It is a bit more expensive due to it’s low yield in processing, but produces it’s wonderful effects in very small doses.

Helichrysum can be used in a simple carrier oil by itself, though it is considered synergistic with Rosehip seed oil and sometimes with Lavender essential oil. This easy-to-make combination has been noted by professional aromatherapists to “heal wounds with minimal or no scarring” though the nutritive triple unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin A compounds of Rosehip seed, combined with the anti-inflammate and regenerative properties of the Helichrysum. Helichrysum can be a little bit pricey, but it’s wonderful effects have been noted at very low concentrations of the total blend – a little will go a long way. contains

Lavender essential oil the most commonly used aromatic oil due to it’s pleasant, soothing aroma and broad range of healing effects. Lavender is also included in many skin care blends as it also contains ketone molecules which stimulate tissue regeneration. The specific type of lavender oil is distilled from the flowers of the Lavendula angustifolia species. Lavender, also like helichrsum, is an anti-inflammatory, and is generally thought to bring synergy to essential oil blends. It can be included to almost any skin care blend to enhance the effects and aroma.

Next up is the essential oil distilled from the leaves of common Sage, or Salvia officinalis. Sage is used in low concentrations in very specific conditions – where the scars are old and require a little extra phytochemical power to heal. Sage oil can bring circulation to the area, and can assist the scarred area of the skin to regenerate, particularly in concert with other oils. Sage can be used in stretch mark formulas, but should only be employed post-partum because of the high thujone content of the oil.

Rosemary is the final essential oil we’ll cover here for skin healing and scar treatment. Rosemary of the Verbenone chemotype (rather than Cineol, which does not have the same properties) contains regenerative ketones like Lavender and Helichrysum, plus has the added benefit of stimulating the skin’s metabolic process. This oil can bring greater circulation to skin tissues, delivering nutrients and eliminating cellular waste and toxins.

All these oils but Lavender should be diluted in a carrier before use (Lavender CAN be used directly on the skin, but will be used in diluted form in the following blends). Many studies have shown the great efficacy of essential oils at low concentrations – so in Aromatherapy, ‘less is more’ is a general rule. Two highly regarded carrier or ‘base’ oils used for skin treatment are Rosehip seed, cold-pressed from a plant native to the mountain regions of South America, and Hazelnut oil, which is suitable for all skin types. These oils will help the essential oils absorb into the skin, and can provide their own nutritive properties. Rosehip seed contains a wealth of fatty acids, plus a compound similar in action to the pharmaceutical preparation ‘Retin A’. without the drying side effects. Hazelnut oil has mild astringent properties, and will not leave the skin feeling greasy. It is appropriate even for acne prone skin.

And now for a few recipes – a few simple mixtures can cover several skin-healing conditions, both for recent wounds and older scarred tissue. For the support of recent wounds, use one ounce Hazelnut and one ounce Rosehip seed oils. To this, add 25 drops each of Helichrysum and Lavender essential oils – apply twice a day once the wound can get moist. For the improvement of appearance of old scars, keloid scars and acne scars, try the same base oils, replacing the Lavender with Sage essential oil. Apply regularly for 3 to 6 months for best results. For the post-partum reduction of stretch marks, again to the same base oil formula, add 25 drops Sage essential oil and 25 drops Rosemary verbenone. Use this formula again for several months for best results.

This is a summary of a particular aspect of using essential oils for natural health, wellness and beauty. These are effective, tried and true recipes used for their specific, wound healing applications. With some research, you will find there are wonderful recipes using essential oils for a broad range of skin care applications – they work, and they’re heavenly to use! As with all aromatherapy use, go slowly, watch for any (rare) skin reactions, and remember that less is more with essential oils – almost all have been noted to work in very low, well tolerated concentrations.

Why You Should Consider Natural Pain Relief

August 3rd, 2008 by Jennifer Macaire
by Ellen Macy

More and more people are choosing national pain relief as a better and safer option to western medicine that traditionally uses laboratory-born drugs to alleviate pain, treat diseases and so on. Medicines using herbs and plants are often considered safe, by nature of their organic qualities and many people find security in knowing that the drugs they are ingesting are made by nature and not in a laboratory.

With the onset of the media – celebrity endorsements, for example, or highlight of the negative effects of certain synthetic medicines – and increased awareness of the general public, more and more people are opting for natural remedies as an alternative source of pain relief or solution to certain serious ailments.

Choosing natural pain relief as a better and safer option can sometimes work against you if you find your body reacting adversely to the natural ingredients in these drugs. People mistakenly assume that just because certain medicines are made from natural plant and herb extracts, that they are completely safe. Unfortunately, these people forget to take into consideration the risks that are involved in putting any type of medication into your body.

Natural pain relief medication is made from certain plants and herbs, which some people might find themselves allergic to. In addition, if you are already on other medication, these natural drugs might counteract your current treatment or even elevate the ailment. So, choosing natural pain relief as a better and safer option might not always be the wisest decision to make.

Unfortunately, not all herbal drugs have been fully tested and researched on the way synthetic lab-created medicines have undergone. As such, some of these medicines might work against any current treatment that you might be undergoing. It is always important, if you’re looking for natural pain relief, that you first consult your doctor on what you should take and how much just so that you can receive the most out of your treatment.

Herbs and other natural plant extracts are known for their amazing healing properties. People are drawn to these qualities and often use various herbs to treat the common cough and cold and sometimes as natural pain relief. Certain herbs have also known to treat cancer with astounding success.

Before you buy into any natural pain relief solutions, it will be wise to bear in mind that some natural remedies are very strong in their effect on the body. Some may contain components that can cause a drastic increase or decrease in blood pressure. Make sure that you take in only what you’ve been prescribed and find out as much as you can about important side effects so that you don’t get caught by surprise.

If you’re interested in natural pain relief, alternative medicine aims to tackle the root of the pain and as a consequence, cures the body of its ailment. Fast becoming more and more recognized as a legitimate and effective source of healing, alternative medicine is slowly being given recognition by the western medical profession. Not only will natural medication help you soothe your discomfort, there are also remedies that are extremely effective and not only soothe your body but can help you manage the pain successfully.

Looking to enjoy the advantages of natural pain relief, then your first step must be to find a physician that you are comfortable with and get a proper prescription on natural remedies that work to ease your physical situation. Natural pain relief, when used appropriately and with wisdom will not only ensure you of its safety to your health but also help you manage any pain you might be experiencing.

Drugs and Alcohol – Behind the Abuse

August 3rd, 2008 by Patrick Glancy
by Sara Mendez

There are many forms of drug and alcohol abuse. Some people binge drink while others drink just to get though the day or to cure their hang over from the previous night. Same with drugs, some abuse street drugs while others take excessive amounts of prescription pills but yet feel it is ok to take the prescription pills since they were prescribed. Whatever your choice of addiction is, they have one thing in common, low self esteem.

Drugs and alcohol are usually just a mask to hide the real problem, low self esteem. According to Selfesteeminternational.org, recovering addicts and alcoholics indicate that low self esteem is the biggest problem in their lives. They feel alcohol is only a symptom to the alcoholic’s real disease. Low self esteem causes and contributes to anxiety, neurosis, defensiveness and ultimately drug and alcohol abuse according to Selfesteeminternational.org.

Drug and alcohol abuse can start early on, earlier than some parents and society would like to admit. In a study done by Selfesteeminternational.org, 18 year olds who already use drugs and alcohol heavily started using when they were as young as seven. They reported feeling alienated by their families, not good enough, anxious, unhappy and overly impulsive. 66% of high school seniors surveyed reported using drugs or alcohol heavily in order to fit in and fill a personal void.

Sometimes the pain of low self esteem is so difficult to deal with that people turn to destructive behaviors such as drugs and alcohol. They self medicate in hopes that the pain will go away. Addicts use their addictions to help them work through to pain of self hate, or so they think. By drinking or using drugs a vicious cycle of more self hatred starts and before you know it, your life is completely out of control. One drink turns into two, two turns in to three and before you know it your life is all about drinking. You family doesn’t want you around, you have spent all your money and lost your job. Your actions only lead to more self hate and disappointment in yourself.

People have low self esteem for many reasons. However, low self esteem is not caused from one isolated incident but by repetitive criticism over many years. The criticism can come from anyone, a parent, a sibling, teacher or society in general. It is difficult to estimate how many people are experiencing low self esteem, but it is safe to say many people suffer from at least one of the symptoms. Maybe you are happy to see someone fail, overly aggressive, do not recognize your own good qualities, or try to please others because you do not know how to say no.

Fortunately there is help out these for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse. One of the most important factors in recovery is acceptance of the disease and being able to identify why you choose to be an addict in the first place. Often it is difficult to address years of low self esteem in a twelve week program. That is why follow up counseling and treatment is recommended. One new treatment that is being recommended is hypnosis. Hypnosis works with the subconscious mind to identify painful memories causing the low self esteem and help the patient work through the memory and develop new self confidence. Hypnosis is done in a safe environment and is chemical free which appeals to many recovering addicts.

Some people feel therapy and counseling is the best and only treatment needed to help recovering addicts. Unfortunately, if this were true all rehab facilities would offer a 100% cure rate. Most can not even offer a 70% cure rate. It is important to have a treatment plan that will help to identify why you started abusing drugs or alcohol in the first place, and this is difficult to do with a counselor. Often addicts have little trust in counselors and are more censored when talking until they get to know the counselor. Since hypnosis works with the subconscious mind, it allows the addict to think and speak openly about low self esteem issues.

Drug and alcohol abuse is a very serious problem, but what is more concerning is the underlying behavior of self hate. Until that issue is dealt with, the thought of alcohol and drug abuse is always there for the addict. There are many ways to help improve self esteem but why not do it in a safe environment and start dealing with the real problem today.

The Benefits Of Coral Calcium

August 3rd, 2008 by Lee Dobbins
by Lee Dobbins

Millions of people in many different nations world-wide are enjoying the health benefits of coral calcium. If you are considering joining this growing group, then you’ll want to focus you marine coral calcium whose benefits are outlined below.

Whether it’s organic or inorganic, marine coral consists of two major compounds, calcium and magnesium; and it’s tasteless and odorless. Marine coral diffuses slowly in water, approximately 1% per hour. However, it will dissolve much faster (within minutes) when ingested by capsule into the stomach.

One of the interesting health benefits of coral calcium is that it can change the alkalinity of water when dissolved in it. In addition, it aids in controlling the bacteria in your water and assists in the eradication of residual chlorine as well as other contamination. For this reason, adding marine coral calcium to your drinking supply could be good for your health.

Understanding a general certificate of analysis for coral calcium is important to understanding the characteristics of marine coral calcium. A calcium content of 20 to 28% and a magnesium content of 10 to 14% is what is desirable. In addition, arsenic, mercury, lead, cadmiumand bacteria should be below critical levels. PCB content should be checked as well since they can cause many serious illnesses and diseases including cancer. PCBs are environmentally man-made toxins and any coral calcium that is taken as a nutritional supplement must be free of them.

Chelation of minerals is another characteristic of marine coral calcium. It is formed when the organic substances are bound to metal ions. When these metals are incorporated into your body chemistry, this chelation process takes place. Many studies have shown that chelated metals are absorbed by the body much better than the plain minerals.

It is not necessary to an understand the characteristics of marine coral calcium in order to reap the healthy benefits of coral calcium – simply buy the best quality capsules you can and see how your health improves!

Reasons For Having Bad Breath

August 2nd, 2008 by B. R. Hooper
by B. R. Hooper

The Culprits of Bad Breath

Have you ever met a person that seemed like they always had bad breath? Most everyone has been friends with or at least known a person that had bad breath every time they opened their mouth, and usually there is a reason for that. There are certain medical conditions, diets, habits, and other issues that can contribute to the various causes of bad breath. However, depending on who you are and what your individual life is like, the different causes of bad breath may or may not apply to you. But in the case that you happen to be the person with the chronically bad breath, investigating the various causes of bad breath as they happen to you can be very helpful.

Your Diet

Eating certain foods can help freshen or even help stink up your breath! Fresh foods such as lettuce, parsley, and fruit can help your breath smell better. Eating foods that have not been properly cleaned or even cooked can lead to bad breath. So if you can watch the kind of foods you eat, it can help with keeping your breath fresher and cleaner!

Your Habits

Setting up a regular routine of dental hygiene is the best way to get rid of bad breath everyday. It is also the best preventative “medicine” for future spells of bad breath or even tooth and gum disease. Many food particles are left inside the mouth after eating and drinking – and when they are left in a warm, wet environment, decay is bound to happen. So a good brushing and flossing can help prevent bad breath by just getting rid of the biggest culprit of bad breath – Rotten foods!

In Conclusion

Because bad breath has so many causes, it’s good to rule out diet or bad habit factors first. After that, if you’re still suffering from some it, it might be good to get the cause of bad breath checked out by a professional. Sometimes it can be caused by an internal problem, and you certainly wouldn’t want it going on and on forever!

A Brief Introduction To Aromatherapy

August 2nd, 2008 by George Mole
by Lorraine Butler

Aromatherapy is a sort of herbal medicine, and one that is rapidly growing in popularity. This practice relies for the most part on the use of essential oils from botanicals such as flowers, trees and other plants. Distilled by a steam process, these oils can be effective in alleviating quite a few diseases and other physical ills.

There are literally hundreds of essential oils that can be used in aromatherapy. Each oil has its own therapeutic qualities. Some oils have calming and soothing properties, whilst others will help to energize and boost the patient undergoing aromatherapy treatment.

For sufferers of chronic pain or recovering from an injury, aromatherapy can be most beneficial. Even the most serious of conditions can respond positively to aromatherapy. There is also a lesser risk of potential side effects associated with everyday medicines.

Why Choose Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the ideal solution for anybody seeking a truly natural treatment or cure for their ailments. It is also the preferred choice for people who do not want to use prescription drugs.

Aromatherapy is used to treat anything from a simple insect bite or sore throat to minor fungal infections. It is even being used to treat more complex matters such as Alzheimer’s with some degree of success in some cases.

What Comes Next

The first step in getting into aromatherapy is to learn more about it. This type of medicine has a very long history, going back thousands of years. Given this, there obviously is much to be learned about aromatherapy; and of course it’s always ideal to learn everything you can before starting any course of treatment, even safe and natural ones.

You’ll want to learn about aromatherapy’s practical uses. One is the aromatherapy massage, in which essential oils are used in combination with a massage to produce deep relaxation along with lowering the patient’s blood pressure and slowing the heart rate.

Those who have tried an aromatherapy massage generally agree that it was effective in reducing stress and making them feel relaxed as well as giving an all over feeling of well being. The physical and mental effects both of sports injuries respond especially well to this treatment.

Some Easy Ways To End Bad Breath

August 2nd, 2008 by Billy Diaz
by Rone Hooper

Getting Rid of Bad Breath – For Ever!

Most people who suffer from bad breath know it that they do. It is not too difficult to learn how to get rid of bad breath, if it is not from a medical or dental condition. All you need to do is watch what you eat, and establish a healthy and regular oral hygiene routine everyday.

The Main Reasons For Bad Breath

The most common cause of bad breath is the leftover food that can get stuck on or in between your teeth after eating. For people who eat a diet high in protein, it is not unusual for them have more occurrences of bad breath because of the longer metabolic break down of the higher proteins. People who eat a diet that is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables are less likely to get bad breath, because this type of diet is conducive to fresh and clean breath due to the quicker metabolic break-down of the fresher foods.

Several Great Ways to Get Rid Of Bad Breath

If food is caught on or in between the teeth, bacteria can form which causes a fermenting odor. The only real way to prevent this bacteria from forming is to invest a little time after each meal and brush them clean! Flossing at least once a day can get rid of the stuck foods. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings can get rid of the plaque and food that is missed altogether.

Cleaning the tongue is also really important in getting rid of the stink-forming bacteria in the mouth. It has been proven in clinical tests that cleaning the tongue of plaque and mucus can reduce odors and bacteria by 75%! So not only is brushing important, but cleaning the tongue can be even more effective.

A proper daily dental routine should be in place to help you get rid of all the bacteria that will cause you to have bad breath. You should brush your teeth after every meal and floss daily to ensure you get rid of bad breath. Using a disinfecting mouthwash can help wash way bacteria that could have been missed after brushing.

It is also recommended that you quit smoking. Smoking is a huge cause of bad breath. Not only does your mouth smell, but your clothes, skin and hair as well. When you have bad breath that is caused by smoking the only real way to get rid of the odor for good is to quit for good. Not only will your breath freshen up, but your body will thank you also!

Interestingly, alcohol can cause bad breath. Yep! Just brushing teeth won’t do it since it sticks in your body for hours. So think about that when you head out for a drink. Maybe a nifty non-alcoholic one might do your breath better.

Coral Calcium – Japan Reefs Are Best

August 2nd, 2008 by Lee Dobbins
by Lee Dobbins

More health products are relying on natural elements for their ingredients such as coral calcium. A vital part of this product comes from the calcium carbonate of coral reefs that are off the southern coast of Japan. Calcium carbonate are the main mineral in these sea reefs and acts as a glue to keep the reefs intact which is why when buying coral calcium, Japan based sources are the best.

Climatic and ecological conditions are the main requirements for the reef to be generated. Under the sea where the temperature is between twenty to thirty degree Celsius, there are more chances that these kind of fully developed reefs exist. These reefs need coral calcium which is provided by the sunlight. Sunlight helps in the survival of the delicate organisms which are a part of required infrastructure. Most of the inhabitants on the reef survive on algae, as it is the basic source of nutrient. So the sunlight becomes more important.

In fact, the coral calcium Japan is famous for comes from a complex ecosystem. The reefs are teeming with life that represent a complicated food chain. The algae and plant life provide food for the herbivorous fish who in turn produce the waste that builds more sections of the reef that the algae grows on.

Corals are part of a group of marine animal kingdom. These marine animals include hydroids, jellyfish, sea anemones, and a special group called Cnidaria of Phylum class. Corals have a large number of tentacles all identical and symmetrically placed all around the body , all tentacles having one common opening to the digestive tract. The Coral polyps are venomous and have stinging cells for their protection. The corals secrete a kind of calcium carbonate which forms the exoskeleton to form a hard outer surface. It is this hard outer surface which protects the soft and venomous coral polyps. These are the living animals who are the reef builders often found in the tropical oceans.

Coral reefs house many species of life, some nocturnal and some daytime. Coral reefs are the home of various kinds of fungi, worms, sponges, and fish.

The coral calcium Japan based reefs are complex structures. These reefs, teeming with life have a well balanced synergy which plays a key role in giving coral calcium it’s vital health benefits.

Original Coral Calcium – It’s Not Just A New Fad

August 2nd, 2008 by Lee Dobbins
by Lee Dobbins

Coral calcium was introduced to the western culture some 500 years ago. Spanish explorers had “discovered” coral calcium in Okinawa and brought it back to Europe. These explorers had seen the beneficial effects of what was called the coral sand (the original coral calcium) on the people living on the coral islands. They brought ships full of this sand back to Spain so that the Spanish could benefit from the wondrous minerals.

The Spaniards must have been as interested in alternative health remedies back then as we are today because Spain boasts historic monuments which are considered to be the oldest drugstores in the world and on their shelves are clay pots that contain coral calcium labels.

But, the history of coral calcium goes back way before that and it may be that the original coral calcium was once sought after as the fountain of youth. Legend has it that an emperor from China send thousands of explorers off to find a magical place called Horai which was touted to be a “heaven on earth”. This place was thought to exist near the East coast of China in the warm ocean waters. It was said that in this place was a life sustaining elixir and the emperor wanted this elixir brought back to him.

But luck or perseverance, the explorers found this magical place and it did have an elixir of life. The problem was that it was such a beautiful place and the elixir (the original coral calcium) so wonderful that none of the explorers wanted to return to the emperor with it! This island is only described in legend as the province of Okinawa, a coral based island in the midst of pristine, clear seas.

For years people have been experiencing the benefits of consuming coral calcium. Its role in promoting good health was becoming known in many different countries. Coral calcium was being used by the people of mainland Japan by the 1900’s and was soon discovered by the people of China, Russia, Britian, Sweden, and France. Its popularity spread across the Atlantic to the United States and by the 1970’s the US was also using it as a dietary supplement.

The western world is increasingly recognizing the widespread health benefits of coral calcium. Though the original coral calcium use started hundreds of years ago, people’s lives all throughout the world have been , and are still being, transformed through the use of this dietary supplement.

Stop Armpit Sweat Naturally

August 1st, 2008 by Jed Elaine
by Jed Elaine

mpit Sweat is a tricky issue. To start with, many people are generally not comfortable about discussing it. We know it’s there albeit somewhat unwelcome without really understanding its purpose. People must not jump the gun to Stop Armpit Sweat and it’s for their own behoof that they are able to see genuine and sensible order for it as in the case of Excessive Armpit Sweating.

Actually, Armpit Sweat is not only normal and natural, it is indeed necessary. Its main function is to cool our body when it gets heated up through physical exertion, emotional stress or other physiological stimuli. Aside from that, armpit sweat serves as lubricant between our arms and torso. It also facilitates fluid balance in our body by discharging waste substance, including toxins.

Our SNS (Sympathetic Nervous System) regulates and primes the body into involuntary action and Armpit Sweating is one of its best-serving channels. It is only when the SNS goes haywire that the sweating becomes a problem. This can happen in two ways: excessively or deficiently, termed medically as Axillary Hyperhidrosis and Axillary Anhydrosis respectively.

Unlike its opposite number, Excessive Armpit Sweating is rarely fatal or life-threatening. There are two types namely Primary and Secondary Axillary Hyperhidrosis. Also known as Primary ESD (Excessive Sweat Disorder), its causes are difficult to ascertain or pinpoint. Possible contributing factors are diet, hygiene, physical fitness, emotion, environment and heredity. Secondary ESD is nastier but clear-cut in its cause and treatment. It’s simply a direct effect of another underlying medical problem such as diabetes, thyroid and the likes, the cure of which will duly eradicate the Sweating Problem at hand.

Millions of Americans have Excessive Armpit Sweating in varying degree with some on the mild end of the scale not even aware of their ailment. On the other hand, those who are affected severely experience all kinds of struggle ranging from physical handicap, discomfort and burden to emotional torment and distraction and other psychological setbacks.

Fortunately, there are several proven remedies and ways to Stop Armpit Sweat from going out of control but each comes with its price of cost, risk, side-effect and even scar. It’s therefore well-advised to explore natural cures for a start before resorting to more drastic and intrusive methods. In fact, it’s not uncommon that sufferers recover from Excessive Armpit Sweating just by espousing sound mind, body and soul.

Women’s Natural Beauty: Essential Oils for Mature Skin Care

August 1st, 2008 by Helena Masters
by Helena Masters

Pure essential oils are found in many of the world’s finest beauty care preparations for mature skin, with very good reason. Known effects of essential oils include stimulation of cellular metabolism, tissue regeneration, antioxidant action, anti-inflammatory effects, and hormone-like activity. These benefits form the therapeutic foundation for topical support of the health and beauty of aging skin. And while essential oils used in natural skin care many not sound as exclusive as some fancy laboratory-made concoctions from Europe, their results can certainly be as profound. The added plus being you can make a blend precisely suited to your skin’s needs at a fraction of the cost of the high-end European imports. All the ingredients you’ll require are often available at your local health food store, with the more exotic items found on the internet from providers of therapeutic-grade aromatherapy supplies.

What makes essential oils and their accompanying carrier oils so effective for natural skin care? It happens that their chemical structures are highly-compatible with that of our skin cells. Essential oils are easily absorbed through the dermal layers and even through the skin’s individual cell walls. This makes them extremely simple to create and use your own formulas. Just mix each chosen essential oil into one or more carrier oils (which have their own therapeutic effects as well) at the recommended concentrations, then apply regularly for best results. The carrier oils will do just as the name implies – ‘carry’ the essential oils more deeply into the skin, and prevent them from being quickly evaporated into the air (as a perfume might be).

Let’s have a look at the carrier oils, also aptly named ‘base’ oils. These are oils cold-pressed from seeds, nuts and fruit that will make up the foundation of any formula. There are several to choose from that support the health and beauty of mature skin. These natural oils will form 95-98% of your blend, with the essential oils being added as the ‘active ingredients’. Avocado is first on the list, being included in many recipes for its hydrating and nutritive properties. Avocado is especially suited to dry skin, and should make up about one-fifth of the ‘base’ for dry-to-normal skin. Next is Apricot Kernel, also highly recommended for dry-to-normal skin, or for irritated and damaged skin. Apricot can make up the entire base if you so desire. Evening Primrose is a highly nutritive oil with a significant amount of essential fatty acids – important for building healthy tissues. Evening Primrose can make up to one quarter of the base. Hazelnut oil is very common in skin care blends, as it is well tolerated by all skin types. It can be especially useful for those with a tendency toward oily skin, as it has mildly astringent properties. Despite the seeming contradiction to applying ‘oil’ to an already ‘oily’ complexion, Hazelnut is recommended in the most advanced medical aromatherapy texts for this use – it can make up to 100% of the base. Perhaps the most important carrier oil to consider for mature skin is Rosehip seed – pressed from the seeds of a wild rose from South America, it contains research-validated vitamin A compounds that act like natural ‘Retin-A’, enhancing the skin’s natural regeneration, lessening the appearance of fine lines, supporting healthy skin that may have endured sun-damage, and unifying skin coloration. Rosehip seed can, and should, make up to one quarter of your base recipe. For example, a four-ounce base formula specific for dry-to-normal skin may be one ounce Avocado, one ounce Rosehip seed and two ounces of Apricot Kernel – other oils should be substituted according to your skin type.

And now for the magic ingredients, the essential oils: Carrot Seed essential oil is distilled from the seeds of Wild Carrot, Daucus carota. It is considered one of the most potent revitalizing essential oils for the skin. It is chosen particularly as a remedy for dull, pallid and lifeless skin where one’s lifestyle and/or environment may have taken their toll on the skin’s vibrancy. Carrot seed has a smooth, earthy aroma that will blend well with many other oils. Also for revitalizing the skin, Rosemary Verbenone can be highly effective – this is a type of rosemary essential oil containing a higher amount of regenerative ketones than common rosemary. The essential oil ‘displays its main activity in the dermis (the middle layer of the skin), where it stimulates the metabolic functions, circulation, and elimination of waste products’ according to Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, one of America’s leading medical aromatherapists, in his ‘Advanced Aromatherapy’.

Clary Sage essential oil is noted as being particularly suited to natural beauty care. It contains sclareol, which mimics the effects of estrogen; this is noted by one expert author as the primary reason it helps with skin aging. It may also be the reason Clary Sage is said to regulate the skin’s secretions, bringing balance to both over-dry and over-oily skin. Elsewhere, it is noted as relaxing – even mildly euphoric – which may also contribute to its positive effects for wrinkles. Sweet Fennel is another ‘estrogenic’ essential oil, called for by Valerie Worwood in ‘The Complete Book of Essential Oils’ as an ingredient in wrinkle-preventative blends for all ages.

A couple of lesser known yet highly effective skin care specialty oils are Cistus and Sea Buckthorn. Cistus is distilled from the Rock Rose flower, with astringent qualities used for firming the skin. Some Cistus varieties tend to have a rather medicinal aroma, but truly fine ones are sweet and alluring. Sea Buckthorn is pleasingly sweet, and should be considered for blends for all skin types. Found as a CO2 distillation (not to be confused with the cold-pressed Sea Buckthorn carrier oil) the essential oil is a deep red color, indicating the high concentration of carotenes, vitamin A precursors so important to skin health. The virtues of Sea Buckthorn have been hailed by users with a wide variety of skin conditions and types at every age – it is useful in very small amounts, and need only make up 1% of your recipe to enjoy its benefits.

Of course no discussion of skin care and aromatherapy would be complete without Lavender. True lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) can be included in aromatherapy blends for skin at any age. It may be especially supportive of aging skin through its combination of anti-inflammatory, balancing, and regenerative actions. Lavender is also well-known for its relaxing effects, and its support for stress reduction may quickly result in improving your skin’s appearance. For those whom enjoy its floral aroma, Lavender may be added in whatever concentration one chooses to impart its aromatic quality to the formula. For an even stronger anti-inflammatory and regenerative effect, use Helichrysum essential oil (also known as Everlasting or Immortelle). Helichrysum may be the most profoundly healing essential oil for damaged skin, often called for in blends for healing wounds or reducing the appearance of scars. If you are combining aromatherapy with other treatments such as microdermabrasion, Helichrysum would be an important ingredient in your blend.

The recipes for natural skin for mature skin are quite simple. A good starting place is the following ratio: ten drops of each essential oil to every one ounce of carrier oil. For example, if you have four total ounces of carrier oil, use forty drops of each essential oil. More essential oil is rarely better when blending a formula for the skin – many essential oils work best at low concentrations with some oils potentially irritating the skin at high doses. A good rule of thumb is to keep your overall concentration of essential oils below five percent of the total concentration. This ratio works out to about thirty drops per ounce of carrier. If you are designing your own recipe, you can start with equal amounts of essential oil in your blend. Some oils will have more powerful aromas than others; most of these very potent aromas will be oils that you will want to use in smaller quantities. You can also adjust according to your aromatic preferences as well, thus creating a formula that not only supports your skin’s health and metabolism, but smells lovely too.

Though many of these ingredients are preferred for women’s beauty care, comparable recipes are also used by men. A more masculine formula can be created using essential oils from woods – Cedarwood and Sandalwood are both good examples, having excellent therapeutic properties. Both Frankincense and Myrrh essential oils both have warm earthy aromas and are also noted for their positive effects on aging skin. Including oils purely for their aromas is always an option, too! Please note, there are a there are a few oils that should not be applied to the face: Cinnamon, Oregano, Clove and Red Thyme; pressed citrus as well as Angelica Root oil are ‘phototoxic’ (make the skin more sensitive to UV rays) and should not be applied to skin that will be exposed to sunlight in the following 72 hours. If you’re not sure about a particular essential oil, check with a reliable resource.

Making therapeutic blends for mature skin is enjoyable, easy-to-do, and cost effective. By using therapeutic-grade oils and carriers, you’ll be creating an effective, beautiful smelling formula precisely for your own skin condition. Moreover, you can adjust the recipe over time as your needs change, or make different formulas with various aromas to double as natural perfumes. As always with aromatherapy, start slowly, listen to your body and have fun!

August 1st, 2008 by fatimah edris
by Patsy Hughes

Knowing burn treatment is becoming necessary because most accidents that happen in the house is burn. Accidents happen anywhere anytime to any body,it is sad but true that most of these accidents happen in our own homes.

When we are given the fact, we will at least push ourselves to get more information related to burn pain relief with burn treatment.

Types of Burns

There are first degree burn, second degree burn and third degree burn which range from the very minor to the very serious, burns can weakened their victims.

The smallest burn should not be underestimated, because it can still be extremely painful. Therefore it can mean the difference between a minor calamity and a greater calamity if we know or don’t know how to treat the burn with burn treatment.

It is important if the burn is swelling, blistering severely, or covering a large area of skin, it means it is a serious burn. So you should right away get some proper treatments. Serious burns mean they are either in second or third degree. The quicker burn treatment is given, the better because they can be extremely dangerous.

If this happens, measure the victim’s breathing and pulse rate and quickly call for emergency services immediately. Do not remove any clothing surrounding a severe burn, as in many cases the skin will have fused to the clothing. Additionally, do not apply cold water to severe burns as this can institute shock. Most importantly burn treatment of a severe burn is to keep the wound clean and moist. Damp tepid compresses and clean dressings are good enough until emergency help comes.

For the first degree or minor burn that usually happen in and around our homes; the first degree burn burn treatment can be carried out by you. This is due to the fact that the first degree burn only affects the first layer of the skin. When it happens, run the burn under cold water to stop the burning process. Don’t forget to apply an antibiotic cream on the burn before you wrap loosely the burn in clean, dry cloth. The victim may need burn pain relief which you can get over-the-counter, at least it will help relieving the pain. However, if with the burn treatment the burn is still not healing after a few days, you must quickly get a medical consultation.

Other burn treatment which you can apply:

Soak or coat affected area in egg white. You will feel no pain from the burn while the egg white is still wet . When it dries up the pain may come back so reapplication is necessary.

For a smaller burn, mix one or two teaspoons of sodium bicarbonate with a very small amount of water, just enough to make it into a smooth paste (not runny). Place the paste directly onto the burned area and leave it for some minutes. The pain will subside immediately.

If you want the burn to stop and heal fast, why don’t you try applying toothpaste on the burn.

Grab a tomato and cut it into thin slices and rub over the burned area with one slice of tomato. Rub gently. The acids from the tomato takes away the pain and the blister will not formed.

In ensuring burn treatment to be effective precaution must be taken should it ever become necessary.

Coral Calcium Tea – Is It All It’s Cracked Up To Be?

August 1st, 2008 by Lee Dobbins
by Lee Dobbins

Does coral calcium tea provide you with the same health benefits as a coral calcium supplement? Those who are drinking this tea should be aware that they are getting only a partial benefit – just about 2% – of the marine coral’s nutrients. Only those nutrients which are dissolved in the tea water are giving you the benefit, otherwise this drink is just coral water.

Clean water that contains coral calcium undergoes both physical and chemical changes that are beneficial to your health. Increased alkalinity helps balance the ph level of the body. There is not, however, enough coral sand in the tea bags to change the oxidation reduction potential of the water. To produce these rapid changes they would most likely have been treated by adding other strong alkalinizing substances such as calcium hydroxide or other hydroxides or oxides of alkaline metals.

Taking coral calcium in the form of a capsule or powder is much more effective than drinking coral calcium tea.

Often people that drink coral calcium as a tea are really not aware of the amount of calcium that is in their drink. It is an estimated that they would receive between ten and fifty time the mineral nutrient by taking one capsule of coral calcium dependent on the brand and type of tea bag and capsule

But this tea, often called coral water, still has many medicinal purposes and is considered a homeopathic treatment for many aches and pains. Its benefits are derived from the mineral enrichment of the coral water and the coral calcium that lived in it. In addition to the calcium, there are a variety of minerals each of which is important for our health.

While consuming coral calcium tea is beneficial, it should not take the place of dietary calcium supplements. Be sure to only buy from a reputable company and check with your health care professional before adding any supplement to your daily regimen.

Why Is Chakra Meditation So Important?

August 1st, 2008 by Gillian Tamzeen
by Gillian Tamzeen

Chakras are the focal points for universal energy which flows through us, whether we know it or not. Your chakras have a profound influence on your life whether this effect is good, such as when they are properly aligned for energy flow or whether this effect is for the worse, like when they are blocked, preventing the flow of energy or are out of alignment.

Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means energy, and while its roots are Hindu, energy is not partial to a religion. Energy is in fact universal and every single person on this Earth has these energies. The chakra is really the vortex that this energy flows through and manifest physically. The chakras are the channels by which universal energy can flow in and out of our aura.

Making sure that our chakras are aligned and balanced make it possible for us to open our minds and get a better understanding of what our true spiritual nature is. Keep in mind that most people are not balanced and their chakras are not aligned. That is why chakra meditation is so important. To begin chakra meditation it is important you know where the chakras are located and what they do.

Your chakras are sited in vital areas such as your heart and your head. The organs which are in the area of these chakras are used to control the energy of the chakra and are as such directly affected by their chakra. There are seven chakras in the human body.

The first chakra is the Root Chakra and it is located at the base of the spine. This chakra is related to the body and our individual ability to master our body. So your general health, constitution and security are all tied to the Root Chakra. This is also the chakra that helps us realize how we are connected to the world around us. The color for this chakra is red.

The second chakra is the Naval Chakra and it is founding the lower abdomen. This chakra is tied to the acts of giving and receiving as well as our physical feeling of love, sexuality, passion and pleasure. When you are experiencing feelings of harmony, selflessness, generosity and creativity you will feel it in this chakra. The color for the Naval Chakra is orange.

Third is the Solar Plexus Chakra, sited right below your chest. This chakra is representative of your transformational ability and your willpower. Control over your personal energy is also a part of what the Solar Plexus Chakra does. This chakra is where your self discipline is seated; as well as control over the ego. The color of this chakra is yellow.

Your fourth chakra is the Heart Chakra, which can be found at the center of your chest. This chakra is representative of your feelings of compassion, love and understanding. Love which goes beyond the physical aspect is part of this chakra. Green is the color of this chakra.

Fifth is the Throat Chakra, which sits between the top of the sternum and your chin. This is the chakra which is in charge of communication and helps you to understand that honesty, expressed through speech can be a source of truth and wisdom. This chakra’s color is sky blue.

The chakra that is located in our forehead above our eyes is the Brow Chakra. This is commonly referred to as the third eye. Our perception of insight, imagination, intuition and clairvoyance stem from this chakra. The ability to focus on your realization of your own soul is found in this chakra. Divine wisdom and peace of mind is also found here. The color for the Brow Chakra is indigo.

The final chakra is the Crown Chakra, obviously based on the name it is found at the top of the head. So it should go with out saying then that anything that deals with the mind and spirit is controlled here. It is the Crown Chakra that is tied to our individual journey into understanding our own consciousness and our place in time and space. Anything dealing with the Higher Self is rooted in the Crown Chakra. The color for the Crown Chakra is violet.

If you know the function and the location of each of your chakras, you will be able to practice chakra meditation more effectively. You can use meditations which work on individual chakras, or ones which align them as a whole.
