Sinusitis vs. Common Cold: Which is Which?
Paul Tamens For many people who suffer from sinusitis or the common cold it is difficult to identify the differences between the two. Both ailments have symptoms and conditions that are very similar to each other. However, the root cause between the two conditions are different and as such, treating the two conditions effectively will be different as well.
Sinusitis a condition that is typically caused by allergies can seem almost the same as the common cold if you don?t know the differences. Sinusitis and the common cold can cause coughing, sneezing and a case of a runny nose. Sinusitis and the common cold can also cause pains and aches in various parts of the body. Sinusitis and the common cold can both make the patient feel tired and fatigued.
With such major similarities between sinusitis and the common cold, is it possible for you to be able to tell the difference? It is possible. However, you must know what it is you are looking for. The first area where these two ailments differ is how they develop. The common cold comes from a contracted virus passed from person to person. When the virus is attacked by the body?s immune system, the common cold reveals itself in the symptoms that we come to associate it with.
Sinusitis is caused by the inflammation of the sinuses, which are located in the nasal cavity. This inflammation can have many causes including a common cold. However, there are many other triggers of sinusitis that are not related to the common cold. For instance, one of the more common cases of sinusitis occurs as a result of an allergic reaction from pollen. Sinusitis can also be caused by bacteria as well.
One way that you can tell the difference between the two illnesses is to look at how long you have the symptoms. If the symptoms last for only a week or so, it is likely that you have a cold. There is no cure for the common cold. The body?s immune system will fight off and kill the virus on its own. If the symptoms last for more than a week, then it?s possible that you have a case of sinusitis.
The symptoms that show up in the eyes also distinguish between the common cold and sinusitis. The common cold usually has no influence on the eyes. Sinusitis has a major influence on the eyes. The eyes are puffy and swells up rapidly. The eyes also scratch and become watery. Your face will also feel very uncomfortable. If you track how bad the symptoms are you may even be able to track the source of the allergic reaction as well as the symptoms will trigger up worse when you are exposed to whatever is causing the inflammation.
Treatment for sinusitis vs. treatment for a common cold is different as well. The only way you can cure a common cold is to give yourself time to let the immune system eliminate the virus. There is no medication or any medical cure available for the common cold. Sinusitis can be cured through treatment as well as limiting your exposure to whatever is causing the condition. For instance, if sinusitis is being caused by an allergic reaction to pollen, if you limit your exposure to pollen you can cure the ailment.
