Most people know that you need to exercise to maintain good physical health, yet many people simply have no wish to exercise. Often you will hear the excuses are that they have no time to exercise or it is too much hassle trying to find something that is interesting, and not boring. Conversely, there are lots of people that are mindful of the growing problem with an overweight and obese population and they want to do some exercises.

The problem for many is that they don’t want to just exercise to get in shape as it becomes a dull routine. So they look for ideas about a sport to take up to keep in shape, but if you are middle aged or a senior, you will not be considering taking up triathlons or football. Golf, however, is a sport that can cater to those both young and old, and male or female.

Playing Golf as a Sport to Keep Healthy

Golf, as a sport, is quite easy to get into in the sense that you don’t have to train for months to take part – as in a triathlon. Once you have been playing golf for a while, you will find that it is greatly enjoyable and fun. This is the important part to actually getting up and doing some exercise, because when you like what you are doing, you will be surprised at how often you look for excuses to play. This is why golf has emerged as a sport that provides those many formerly inactive people with a good justification to get up and begin to exercise.

From the Outset

From the outset it is better to start playing shorter rounds of golf, maybe 9 holes, until you can advance your overall physical abilities to allow you to be able to handle the physical requirements for a full golf course. Because we are talking about golf as a sport, we must reject using golf carts because this defeats the benefits of golf to get in shape. This makes it necessary to have the physical strength to be able to walk the entire golf course before you can think about playing a round of golf. It may turn out that for your first rounds you can only manage a few of the holes. This may seem disappointing but by always playing, you will manage to develop your stamina and strength to allow you to walk and golf all of the holes.

Increasing Your Fitness Level

Generally, golf is somewhat a good sport for permitting you to slowly break into an exercise schedule. When you first start golf you will be taking golf lessons which will permit you to start off gradually by working on your golfswing. You will start to develop your flexibility and golf muscles at the same time you develop your golf swing.

Even if some folks say that you can play golf when you are unfit or over-weight, this is not correct. True, you could get around the course in a golf cart and get out to take a stiff looking swing to move the ball along the fairway a little distance at a time, but this is not golf. If you are even just a little bit interested in improving your fitness through golfing, you will want to eventually play golf competently. Once you can start scoring low and get competitive, you will want to work on your fitness and flexibility so that you can get improve even more.

If you enjoy golfing then you will not mind getting up early to go to the course. If you really want to take your game to the next level, you will not mind the little bit of effort to exercise your golf specific muscles and a flexibility schedule to develop your suppleness. Once you are addicted to golf you will find that as you want to improve your golf swing you will also be working on getting into shape for golf and staying fit.
