Roller Derby was a staple of the early television era and was similar in its promotional format to its better known “sports entertainment” cousin, professional wrestling. It was frequently seen in the same bad timeslots on the same low powered UHF TV stations, and it was run by the same loose confederation of Runyanesque promoters and businessmen that characterized the regional territory era of pro wrestling. Unfortunately, roller derby didn’t catch on the way professional wrestling did. There was obviously a serious athletic component to it, but the “angles” and storylines surrounding roller derby made pro wrestling seem like Ibsen by comparison. The sport does have its own history–most know that the LA T-Birds were the perennial champions of’70′s, and Ann Calvello and Ralphie Valladares had been in the sport forever and were considered legends–but it never really stuck in the public consciousness like the pre-Hulk Hogan era of pro wrestling.

When the original purveyors of the sport quit promoting in the early’80s most thought it was dead and gone until a ‘new school’ of roller derby surfaced on cable TV via the A&E reality series Roller Girls. It featured a local, all-girl roller derby league in Austin, Texas and followed the lives of the players on and off the track. A sport that had faded into the lowest level of obscurity had been rediscovered and embraced by an eclectic group of young women. They had kept the same essential format, thrown in a healthy dose of burlesque camp and Varga pin-up inspired glamour and changed the competitive format and renamed the competitions “bouts” a la MMA or boxing. The result was a compelling mixture of glamour, toughness and athleticism driven by a healthy dose of punk rock “do it yourself” mentality.

Today, roller derby is a full blown worldwide phenomenon. There are hundreds of local roller derby leagues not only in the United States, but Canada, Australia and Europe. Most of the local groups similarly play up the campy retro pin-up/hot rod iconography and everyone involved sure looks like they’re having a good time. Between teams there’s a vibe of good natured competitiveness and camaraderie.

The young women in roller derby have taken what was cast off TV time filler and revived it into their own distaff ‘action sport’. The community that has sprung up around it bears a striking resemblance to the skateboarding or snowboarding subculture. There’s one big difference–in contrast to more male dominated action sports the roller derby circa 2009 is just the opposite–a living, breathing matriarchal success story.

The new generation rollergirls also pay homage to their sports’ pioneers much in the same way that skateboarders give props to Duane Peters and Tony Alva. Many of the individual group websites have sections devoted to the history of roller derby, and the late Ann Calvello–regarded as the Queen of the original Roller Derby–is revered as something of a patron saint. The Texas Rollergirl group featured in the A&E series has renamed their championship the Calvello Cup.

So what is exercise induced asthma and how does it differ from other types of asthma? In a sense exercise induced asthma is not that much different from the more common allergic asthma, only the circumstances where it can present itself differs. Obviously Exercise induced asthma or EIA only presents itself when there is exercise or activities which require physical strength involved.

The causes in EIA are different. When airborne particles irritate the lungs, that is bronchial asthma. EIA, on the other hand, is brought about by the rapid heat exchange in the airways which causes the irritation. Rapid heat exchange is the quick transition of a cool-to-heated respiratory system. When we engage in activities that require strength and stamina, our breathing becomes shallow to adjust the oxygen intake. This causes the airways to dry up. Our bodies compensate by reheating and producing enzymes to keep the airways moist. The drawback is that it irritates the airways and leads to asthma symptoms.

While this body mechanism doesn’t pose a problem for non-asthmatics, those with the condition can cause asthma attacks. Symptoms are the same: shortness or difficulty of breathing, light-headed due to the lack of oxygen circulating in the body, extreme fatigue that doesn’t add up considering the level of the activity being performed, coughing, wheezing, and chest pains can range from moderate to extreme discomfort. Asthmatics say that the chest pains they feel are like heart attacks.

EIA is also shown to be occurring more during cold weathers. In colder climates, participating in activities such as winter sports (skiing and hockey), EIA is more likely to make an appearance as opposed to summer based sports activities such as volleyball or swimming. Swimming is considered to be the safest sport for exercise induced asthmatics, while it is not readily explained why. One theory is that it may have something do with better moisture retention abilities of the body when participating in water based activities.

Wherever you may go, doctors will not recommend stopping exercise for asthma, even if it is the cause of your symptoms. Exercise is even encouraged as it strengthens your body’s immune system and makes you more resilient to asthma episodes. A few precautionary measures such as warming up before the exercise, taking your medication before exercising, can help. Talk to your doctor about it as he or she may be able to give you a clearer picture of what kinds of exercises you may be able to do. One of the oldest martial arts on the planet is Shaolin. It was brought from India by a fellow named Bodhidharma, and has been an inspiration to martial artists the world over. Interestingly, Shaolin evolved into an internal art atop Wudan Mountain.

I know there will be those who disagree with the concept I present here, but I hold to it, as I have watched students evolve, and the evolution of art from Shaolin to Wudan mirrors what I have seen students go through on a personal level. Indeed, as students peel layers off the art, so do they add layers of awareness within themselves, and attain the truly miraculous.

The beginning students learn to expend energy from the tan tan, to spread that energy throughout the body and make the body hard. Arms become like iron, stances become as if permanent fixtures to the planet. This, however, is all based on explosion, and outward expulsion of energy.

As a student explores the varieties of martial art he may encounter the concept of absorbing energy. The act of guiding a punch, instead of blocking it, brings awareness of the concept of drawing energy in, instead of just putting it out. This progression of art often starts with a hard Shaolin art, goes through a softer art like Wing Chun Kung Fu, and, eventually, ends up with Wudan Tai Chi Chuan.

If the student studies a hard art, and does so with intelligence, he will eventually evolve into the soft. The fact of growing older, of the body no longer being able to handle the hard arts, will draw the student onward into the softer arts. He will develop his punch so that he doesn’t undergo neck injuries, he will learn to use his legs so his hips don’thave problems, and he will naturally evolve his art from hard to soft.

As these progressions of age and art occur, students learn to be softer, using their minds and their bodies to use less effort, and yet retain the abilities they have gained from the hard arts. Instead of violently thrusting energy through their bodies, they use the energy slowly, and focus it. Thus, the blinders slowly come off, and awareness seeps in.

Instead of exploding energy brutally through their bodies, the students learn to channel and guide energy through their bodies. They learn to manipulate energy easier as their awareness builds. They learn that the body energy they were so proud of when they were young and robust was a mere shadow of what they were capable.

Finally, they make the change from hard to soft, from inner to outer, from internal to external, and the Shaolin adept becomes the Wudan sage. Instead of using violent art, the Wudan master moves with an opponent, drawing in the energy of the attack and transforming as he wishes. Yet, though there is wisdom in the Gung Fu of the Wudan variety, there is no disdain for the hard, for the true sage knows the need for his early Shaolin training, he knows the benefit of understanding energy on hard levels if the student is to make the transition to the softer Wudan intelligence.

With the year 2010 upon us and I am sure you have goals floating in your head and wondering how to manifest your goals. Know this, you are a special human being and all your ambitions can be accomplished, provided you take action and follow the capable action plans that follow. Firstly, remember goals in your head is just that and to bring them into realization you need to make an action plan.

Simply Write Them Down

Please get a piece of paper or note book and be ready to write down your goals. Number them and write them down based on the order of importance. Put a actualization date next to each goal and actually visualize yourself getting them. Let us take a good look at how to write your goal effectively:

I will stop two blocks from my my house and walk home everyday in a happy mood. Breathing in and doing simple strecthing as I go home.

Any local errand will now be done using my feet to help eliminate any extra weight. Each movement uses energy and each energy use burns down calories.

If you can afford it, join a local gym. You want to start slow and then work yourself up in minutes! At the gym you need to sweat and do not make the error of reading a magazine as you use the treadmill. You need dedication and focus.

By the second week you will begin seeing results. Buy yourself a weight scale and put it right in your room. Weigh yourself everyday to judge your results. Small weight loss is more preferable than rapid weight loss. You can lose weight by following the above example or you can go back to your boring life existence. You can do it! you can do it! 3. Relaxation Technique refers to the process whereby, the body feels relaxed by an act of visualization that suits an individual the best. Every individual is free to adopt his or her own relaxation method.

Here is a simple method of performing Chakra Meditation:

a) Sit or lie down comfortably.

b) Close your eyes and loosen your clothing. The idea is to be in a natural state without any kind of artificial compulsion on the body and mind.

c) Breathe in a relaxed manner, which should be neither too fast nor too slow. The idea is to give up the control on your breath, and let it flow naturally, but healthily.

d) The next step relates to feeling every part of your body from toe to head in that direction. While your eyes are closed, try to feel everything that you wouldve seen with open eyes, like earth, air, clothes, surroundings etc. The idea is to feel awareness even with closed eyes.

e) You may experience a wave of thoughts, fears, and every kind of emotion during this process. Dont avoid them! This represents the release of stress-related thoughts. With practice and regular exercise, these negative emotions and feelings will disappear.

f) Let you spirit roam in every part of your body. This is the feeling of completeness youve been yearning for.
