Why do people want to use chemical stimulants when they’re so bad for you? The causes of drug addiction are as varied as the variety of drugs that are available for use. There is no one cause for drug addiction just like there is no consistent profile of a drug user.

People who have a history of drug use or misuse in their families are certainly at greater risk for drug addiction problems. It has been shown over and over again that the children of alcohol addicted persons and drug-dependent persons are far more likely to exhibit addictive leanings than offspring of non-addicted mothers and fathers. This is commonly attributed largely to environmental causes and vicarious learning.

The offspring of those addicted to alcohol or drug abusers see their mothers and fathers escaping from problems abusing artificial stimulants. When they encounter problems themselves they are naturally more likely than their peers to reach for the same crutch.

This is not to say though that genetic reasons are immaterial. Certainly babies of dependent mothers can be born with a craving for alcohol or illicit drugs, and many think that the ‘addictive personality’ is something that is fixed in the genes of the addict.

Sometimes however there is no sad background tale behind addiction. Often with an addiction to prescription drugs, the addicted person commenced taking the medically prescribed drugs because they were overcoming some type of legitimate disease. Over time however they began to feel that they couldn’t do without their dose, and that if they stopped taking their meds, the pain would reappear.

People who have low self-esteem are certainly more prone to drug addiction. Such persons may feel they have no have control over over their lives and will turn to drugs as a way to cope. They often feel they can’t please the persons around them so they have to transform themselves in order to fit in. The change is made easier by abusing drugs because the artificial stimulants make them them into somebody and something that they are not. Stress is regularly cited as the number one reason of drug addiction.

Life is stressful for everyone. Some of us however are better able to cope with this than others. Some turn to drugs as an easy way to get passed their anxieties. Once a person starts consuming chemical stimulants to overcome trauma it can be hard to halt the cycle because the stresses are still there once the high is gone, so the user feels he or she needs more drugs to bring more support. That type of cycle can lead to long-term addiction.

Part of the reason for the high incidence of drug addiction is purely because they are so easily accessible. Even for those who don’t have a connection with their resident dealers of illicit drugs, alcohol and prescription drugs are easy to obtain and can prove just as effectual (and destructive).

So why do persons use drugs? The easy answer is that people use drugs in order to control their moods, but as to why some people need so badly to control their moods while other people manage to cope without artificial stimulants, there is no straightforward answer.

by David B Smith

Drug abuse becomes a dependency when a person has a compulsive need to use drugs without care or respect for the consequences that might occur either bodily or emotionally.

Although the symptoms of drug dependence can be hidden by other problems in a user’s life, there are loads of signs and symptoms to look for to tell if you or someone you love has a drug addiction. The most recognizable sign certainly is your treasured-one’s inability to stop taking the drug. People who are dependant upon drugs feel they can’t go on in life without the help of their drug. They go to great lengths to obtain the drug and use it on a habitual basis.

Addicts also begin to lose all interest in activities that they used to like to do. Their whole life is dictated by when and where they can find their next fix. They put aside hobbies, relatives, even work and school. Nothing else is as essential as taking their drug of selection.

Drug addiction tends to show up in a user’s mood. Are they often either exceedingly up or overly down? Mood swings are common with drug addiction as are violent explosions and irrational behavior.

People with a drug addiction will find themselves behaving in ways they ordinarily would never do without the drug. Physically, the aftereffects of drug addiction will inevitably show in the body over time. They may experience a sudden weight loss and seem emaciated or pale to other people. They forget to groom themselves, such as not showering on a routine basis or taking the time to comb their hair. They may have bodily sores on their body, and their eyes may look dull and disinterested, with a faraway look most of the time.

By the time addiction has really taken hold of a person, the body has become used to having the drug in its system. It develops a tolerance, and thus the user will need to take more of the drug in order to achieve the same result it had before.

The dependent user will predictably begin engaging in secretive or dubious behavior, such as withdrawing during gatherings or making frequent, needless journeys just to be by themselves. They can also become emotionally isolated from those they were until that time close to. This isolation makes it easier for them to use drugs without any influence from those around them.

Depression almost always accompanies drug addiction, so look for indicators of hopelessness, negative talk, and withdrawing from all activity. Sudden deviations in work or education performance can also be a sign of addiction. Addicted persons may feel forever weary too, and not want to get out bed – sleeping for long periods of time. This can be a combination of both the effects of the drug and the accompanying sadness.

Drug addiction is a very serious sickness, so if you see these symptoms in yourself or someone you love, seek help. The therapy has to begin somewhere, and when the symptoms appear, the time to get help is now!

If a person finds that they are using a drug so frequently that they are unable to bring themselves to stop using the drug they need immediate help. To those who find themselves in this situation in which they are unable to stop poisoning their bodies treatment is available. Addiction treatment will allow participants to bring themselves out of their drug problems and in to an environment that they can feel safe in as they try to retrieve their lives before drugs.

Treatment exists for every type of addiction imaginable. Each one strives towards the same goal, freeing the addict from drug dependency, but each is unique in its methods. Each one tries to guide the participating addict to a healthy life style free of drugs.

In order to convince a person they are in need of treatment interventions can be held by the friends and family member of the addict. An intervention is when the friends and family of the individual who is chemically dependant on a drug joins together to confront the addict. This is done in an attempt to convince the addict that they are indeed an addict and need help. This technique has proved very efficient form of convincing addicts that they need help. Ninety two percent of all addicts confronted in this way have been convinced to seek treatment and better their lives.

Alcoholism is one of the most common forms of addiction and is also the most ignored. Alcoholics may not have a chemical dependency, but are still addicts none the less if they can not find a way to stop themselves from drinking. In some severe cases alcoholics have had physical drawbacks when they attempt to quit drinking without aid.

In order to slowly bring addicts out of their addiction, while teaching them how to deal with the deprecations of their actions a twelve step program has been created. The courses involved are designed to help the addict accept that they have a problem and teach them how to deal with their problem over the course of a few years.

Detoxification is the step after the addict accepts that they have a problem. It involves the addict’s removal of all harmful drug related substances from the body. Detoxification of drugs such as methadone and heroin, as well as various prescription drugs must be supervised by professionals. The vital signs of the addict will be monitored as medication is given. Nausea, headaches, vomiting, cramps, and sweating are some of the symptoms that can take place during this process.

Klonepin and Buprenophex are the two commonly used drugs used to relieve symptoms of detoxification. The patient’s physical symptoms are relieved by Klonepin while Buprenophex is as an anticonvulsant. The patient must be closely monitored as these drugs are administered. Detoxification can take any where from three to seven days, or as long as the drugs take to leave the addicts system.

Those who suffer from addiction of any form of drug may not realize the harm that they bring to those who care for them. Just the same those who begin using these drugs may not realize how easily they could become addicted. Addiction treatments are and will continue to be the best and easiest way for addicts to find help with their problems. These treatments will smoothly help the addict fall back in to their normal lives while minimizing the risk of relapse.

by Chris Channing

The average addict that is looking to see help will commonly see celebrities go back to drug rehab centers again and again. If celebrities, who have access to the most expensive treatment options, can’t overcome an addiction- what hope is there for the average person? I this case, it’s best to see how difficult celebrities actually have it- and not get discouraged by this prospect.

Celebrities have always been able to escape the justice system because of their status with the media. This is seen with the event in which popular culture icons such as Paris Hilton avoided harsh jail sentences, serving three of her 45-day sentence of the original charges of driving offenses. Because they can get away with things much easier, they have a disregard for the penalties that most people hold.

A celebrity can get away with more than the average person in more ways than one. For instance, they can obtain drugs much easier and in a secretive fashion that average citizens can’t. In fact, odds are that celebrities will be caught with drugs or under the influence of drugs rather than be caught trying to buy them. Since they can afford this secrecy, they will be more inclined to buy drugs without worries of repercussions.

The resort-like drug rehab facilities that celebrities frequent is also a big factor in discouraging celebrities to find help. After all, if the process is more like a five star vacation at a resort, celebrities will be less inclined to show improvement and more inclined to enjoy themselves without focusing on the matters at hand. The average citizen, however, does not have this luxury.

There is also less commitment on the celebrity’s part, as they have more money and can afford multiple visits to a drug rehabilitation center. The average person can’t simply check into a drug rehabilitation center every time they feel it is necessary, yet a celebrity can. This lack of commitment will result in a much lower rate of success unless the celebrity is truly inspired to give up the addiction.

While a drug rehabilitation visit isn’t something the normal person would want to broadcast to their community, it’s as if celebrities rely on the publicity achieved from such events to obtain more sales or leads in their industry. Journalists, newspapers, and media outlets all bring massive attention to the fact that a celebrity has entered a drug rehab program- an thus, it’s just like a celebrity has obtain instant stardom all over again, and the public eye will be on them as a result.

Final Thoughts

Every time a celebrity goes to a drug rehabilitation center, there is usually a lesser chance of long term success because of the aforementioned reasons. This should not discourage the average recovering addict, who is more focused and willing to become an addict free patient for a long period of time- indefinitely. This isn’t to say that celebrities can’t overcome an addiction, but their environment is working against them in the process of them obtaining the help they need.
